2 Rabbis Message
The Rabbi A. Stanley Dreyfus Memorial Lecture On Friday, October 28th, we will honor the memory of our esteemed Rabbi Emeritus, Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus. When Rabbi Dreyfus passed away on July 8, 2008, Rabbi Dr. David Ellenson, President of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, said in his statement: "Our community mourns the loss of a beloved colleague and friend, Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus, whose consum- mate leadership, professional skill, scholarly wisdom, and compassionate con- cern reflected the highest teachings of our faith and our people. . . Dr. Dreyfus leaves a living legacy in the hearts of the thousands of students he mentored and taught. His gifts of intellectual strength and human warmth endure as a source of inspiration." Dr. Dreyfus served as the Director of Rabbinic Placement of the Central Con- ference of American Rabbis (19801991) and taught Liturgy, Commentaries, and Mishnah at the New York campus of HUC-JIR for over forty years. He chaired the Liturgy Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis from 1975 to 1979, overseeing the publication of the Reform prayer books Gates of Prayer, Gates of the House, Gates of Understanding and Gates of Repentance. He served on the Board of Governors of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and the Executive Committee of the New York Board of Rabbis, and was President of the Brooklyn Association of Reform Rabbis, and, at one time, Texas Assembly of Rab- bis. He served on the CatholicJewish Relations Committee of the Diocese of BrooklynQueens. Born in Youngstown, OH, Dr. Dreyfus earned a B.A. with high honors in Classics from the University of Cin- cinnati, and earned Bachelor of Hebrew letters in 1942, and Master of Hebrew Letters and Ordination in 1946 from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. In 1951, he earned a Ph.D. in Jewish Theology from Hebrew Union College, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by HUC-JIR in 1971. His long and distin- guished career encompassed chaplaincy in the U.S. Army (19561965) and spiritual leadership as Visiting Minister of the West London Synagogue in England (summer 1949), and as Rabbi of Congregation Beth El in Beaver Falls, PA (19501951), Congregation B'nai Israel in East Liverpool, OH (19511956), United Hebrew Congregation of Terre Haute, IN (195355) and Temple B'nai Israel in Galveston, TX (19561965). He was the ever-faithful and loving husband of Marianne, father of Dr. James Dreyfus and his wife Rabbi Ellen Weinberg Dreyfus, and Richard Dreyfus, zl, and his wife Helen Bagot Dreyfus and grandfather of Ben, David, Lina, Daniel and Adam. But, without a doubt, his most important professional endeavor, at least as far as we are concerned, was to serve as Rabbi of Union Temple from 1964 to1979, and then as Rabbi Emeritus until his death. He loved the congregation with every ounce of his being, and we all loved him back. On Friday, October 28th, we will honor his memory with the first Rabbi A. Stanley Dreyfus Memorial Lecture. Our distinguished guest speaker will be Rabbi Dr. Martin A. Cohen, Senior History Professor at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. Rabbi Cohen shared a close friendship and deeply respectful collegiality with Rabbi Dreyfus during their long association at HUC-JIR. He is also my trusted and loyal mentor, friend and teacher, and I am honored to welcome him to our temple. We hope that you will join us for what promises to be an ex- traordinary and most memorable evening. -Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman
3 Officers Column Its Going to be a Great Year! We just started a new year, and at Union Temple we're off to a strong start with a two new programs I'd like to highlight: Fridays at Four: What is it? It's the name of our new expanded Tot Shabbat program. Every Friday and 4:00 p.m. the place will be jumping with toddlers and preschoolers having their own special Shabbat celebration. Be sure to check it outand bring friends. PJ Library: No, it doesn't have anything to do with pajamas, although I've heard some talk of a sleepover event connected with this. It's a fantastic program designed to give age-appropriate Jewish childrens books, on behalf of Jewish organizations (like UT), to families with young children FREE. Yes, FREEa fun free book every month. Why not? Call the temple office and sign up now! Call the office for details. Of course, there are many other programs ongoing for adults and kids. Check out the Bulletin, visit our web- site, look at the bulletin board while you're waiting for the elevator. You're sure to find a way to connect. -Ellen Kolikoff, Vice President

Religious School Off to a Good Start Shanah tovah! The new year at Union Temple Religious School has gotten off to a great start! Our first few sessions have been full of interactive learning, prayerful song, and strong relationships. If this month has been any indi- cation, this year promises to be full of growth and fun. At our Religious School, we strive to engage our tra- dition and one another with love and understanding. This philosophy is reflected in a verse from Proverbs (4:8): Hug wisdom to you, and she will raise you up, She will bring you honor if you embrace her. May each of us find ways to hug the enduring Jewish wisdom that offers meaning to our lives, and may our Religious School continue to be a place of loving and joyful learning. Shalom! As always, please send any questions, comments, or feedback to me at uniontempleeducator@gmail.com. -Daniel Kirzane, Educator 6 Preschool Were Back and New and Improved We opened t he doors to a new school year on Sept ember 14 t h and greet ed 81 new and re- t urni ng preschool ers. As we wind down from the joyful celebrations of Suk- kot and Simchat Torah, we come to the quiet, intro- spective month of Cheshvan. After all the holidays in Tishrei, Cheshvan gives us time to reflect on our dreams and hopes for the new year, to take stock and consider ways in which we can bring balance back into our lives. As women, we treasure this month that marks the death of our Matriarch Rachel and of sev- eral remarkable women who continue to inspire us through their works and, in some cases, martyrdom. Join us on Sunday, October 30th at 10 AM, as we celebrate these women and the month of Cheshvan in our first Rosh Chodesh Seder of 5772. Together, we'll explore how we can bring renewal, inner tranquility, spiritual growth, balance and peace into our lives and our world. You won't want to miss this memora- ble morning of stimulating discussion, sharing, friend- ship, and delicious treats. Bring your mother, your sis- ters, your daughters, your friends. All are welcome to this inspiring celebration of womenand of life! We thank all of you who sent in your dues. If it slipped your mind in this busy season, not to worry. Your membership checks are always welcome. Just write one for $36, made out to Sisterhood of Union Temple, and mail it to the temple office. It's one small but important step on the road to tikkun olam. -Barbara Brett, Recording Secretary Sisterhood Celebrate Our Remarkable Women Now that Yom Kippur is here it means that Sukkah building cant be far behind. Brotherhood will be coming together on October 9th to construct the Union Temple Sukkah. Its a great and fun activity and everyone is en- couraged to come and pick up a hammer and drill. Its also time to make sure your bicycle is tuned up as the Brotherhood is planning a bike ride around Pros- pect Park on October 23rd. Looking ahead on Sunday, November 20th, Stevan Segall will be leading a book discussion about the novel 36 Arguments for the Existence of God, by Re- becca Goldstein. Brotherhood wishes everyone the best in the New Year. -David Rapheal, Secretary Brotherhood Building, Biking and Books Join us for a 3-hour guided walking tour of Hasidic Williamsburg for members of Union Temple.
