the Congo, in Bolivia... His entire life

was a struggle, and it is perhaps for
that reason that those verses so clearly
belonged to him.
Many times I saw Ernesto worried,
grave or pensive, yet never truly sad
or bitter. I can't remember a single
encounter which lacked his smile or
that warm tenderness so appreciated
by those who knew him well. In his
conversation there was no room for
the contemptible; he would be
deeply critica! in a brief phrase, and
immediately follow it with something
positive, moving on to a constructive
future. Ernesto could not be perceived
as being against something, but rather
always for something. Perhaps because
of this, he never suffered the slightest
trace of malice.
Since Ernesto made the most of every
minute, even on the bus, he generally
appeared with a book in hand.
Sometimes it was a volume of Freud:
"I want to reread a clinical history for
a case I'm interested in"; at other
times a text book ora classic.
He never had extra money; quite the
opposite. At that time he earned a
living working with Dr. Pisani, doing
research into allergies. His economic
limitations, however, were never a
particular worry for him, nor did they
ever stop him from carrying out wha~
