DATE: 16-10-23 MAJOR DOMAINS OF THE EARTH

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

1. What are the four major domains of the earth

Major Domains of the Earth

a) Lithosphere
b) Atmosphere
c) Hydrosphere
d) Biosphere
2. Name the major continents of the earth.

a) Asia
b) Europe
c) Africa
d) North America
e) South America
f) Australia
g) Antarctica
3. Name the two continents that lie entirely in the Southern Hemisphere.
Australia and Antarctica

4. Name the different layers of the atmosphere.

a) Troposphere
b) Stratosphere
c) Mesosphere
d) Thermosphere
e) Exosphere
5. Why the earth is called the „blue planet‟?

The Earth is called the blue planet because,

a) It is the only planet which has water,

b) It looks blue from the sky because of presence of water on it.
6. Why is the biosphere important for living organisms?
Importance of Biosphere

a) Biosphere sustains all life forms.

b) It provides food to them.
c) It provides stage to all forms of life to act upon.
d) It should be pollution free because pollution is injurious to life forms.
7. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:
Lithosphere: The word lithosphere is made up of Latin word “litho” which means
stone. Hence the lithosphere is the solid portion of Earth. It comprises the rocks of
the earth crust and thin layers of soil that contain nutrient elements which sustain
organisms.
There are two main divisions of the Earth surface. The large land masses are known
as the continents and the huge water bodies are called the ocean basins.
Biosphere: The biosphere is the narrow zone of contact between the land water and
air. This is unique to the planet. Biosphere contains all forms of life. There are
several species of organisms that vary in size from microbes and bacteria to huge
mammals. All the living organisms including human are linked to each other and to
the biosphere for survival.
8. Why the northern hemisphere is called the land hemisphere?
The northern hemisphere is called the land hemisphere because the greater part of
continental landmass lies in the Northern hemisphere while on the other hand a large
Percentage of area in the southern hemisphere is covered with oceans.
9. Differentiate between Troposphere and Stratosphere

10. Define global warming. States the factors responsible for it.
Global warming refers to the general increase in the earth's average temperature,
which causes changes in climate patterns across the globe.
∙ Most prominent factor is from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and
electricity production. They produce carbon dioxide, which is the most common gas
responsible for the global warming.
∙ Other contributors include methane released from landfills and fertilizers. ∙
Gases used for refrigeration and industrial processes.
∙ The loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2.
