SUMMMARY

It takes us through the inception story of the audio streaming and media service provider Spotify. The streaming
platform was the brainchild of Martin Lorentzon and Daniel Ek. Spotify came at a time when nobody could imagine that
instead of CDs and cassettes, music could be stored online, and there could be a business model where everything was
free for the consumer, and still profit could be made. It was such a bizarre notion that no investor wanted to believe the
two entrepreneurs. The series takes us through a journey where we see the transformation of Spotify from a startup that
was finding it hard to pay its employees and get investments to becoming the biggest music streaming provider in the
world.

Issues encountered by “Daniel Ek” That led
him to come up with the idea of Spotify?

Daniel Ek first described music as a series of sounds strung together to create a reaction to
a human mind. He reiterated that Music played a big role in his memories and buying
expensive cassettes and CDs are too much of a deal, too much to be enjoyed. He felt free
from music and then he remembered that no one should have that kind of power over
music.

When Spotify first launched, no one could have predicted that music would soon be
kept online instead of on CDs and cassettes, and that a business model would exist
where customers could access anything for free while still making money.

MY SOLUTION AND THOUGHTS

“The Playlist” not only focuses on the creation of Spotify but also dives into the nuances of Daniel Ek’s childhood that led him to
reinvent the music industry to be accessible for everyone. As viewers get a front row seat to Ek’s childhood, we learn that he
could barely afford to buy music growing up and he never wanted anyone else to feel that embarrassment and pain. At the time,
there was a music pirating website but it wasn’t very fast, and there was no way to organize the music you enjoyed listening to.
Ek decided he would create the most efficient and user-friendly music streaming platform he could think of. Spotify sounds like a
perfect streaming app as it is but it has it's major drawback as seen in the series. The most infamous problem from the app was
that it was paying artist too little for their work. Spotify faces massive backlash of protests and even digital-cancelling. With this
issue, EK was summoned in trial at washington to discuss these issues. I personally think EK had good intentions at the start of
the series but as it slowly progresses i've had my thoughts scrambled as EK was slighlty hinting of becoming a "Shark." in the
music Industry. Certain dillemas would've been dealt with smoother if they fixed the ratio of cut in pay that the artists and
company will receive right from the beginning. This would be a "Domino" Solution as it will solve the preceding problems such as
Bad company image, lawsuits, etc.
