Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning - Refrigeration
One Ton of Refrigeration (1TR) can freeze one ton
of water (0degC / 32degF) for 24 hrs
http://www.convertworld.com/en/power/Ton+of+refrigeration.html
TIP # 1
• Air conditioner sizes can be calculated using
this formula

BTU/hr = A + B
A = width (ft) x length (ft) x 50
B = # people x 500
Sample Computation
• For a 15ft x 20ft regular room with 2 people

BTU/hr = A + B
15000 = 15 (ft) x 20 (ft) x 50
1000 = 2 people x 500

Btu/hr = 15000 + 1000

Btu/hr = 16000 (16,880 KJ, 1.33TR, 4.7kW)
11,500 KJ

16,880 KJ

17,750 KJ
TIP # 1
• Air conditioner sizes can be calculated using this
formula

BTU/hr = A + B
A = width (ft) x length (ft) x 50
B = # people x 500

Warning this is for estimation, and for regular room

construction only. Consult your aircon supplier,
contractor, designer, or use a cooling load /heat
load apps.
TIP # 2
• Refer on the product catalogue for details, and
use the information in coordinating with the
other design and construction trades
(electrical, mechanical, civil)
Nominal
Ratings are
usually sized
base on the
compressor
power in
horsepower
There is an
indoor unit
and there is
an outdoor
unit.
Provide
appropriate
space.
Cooling
Capacity:
choose it
base on
your cooling
load
calculation
Power Input:
Use this to
calculate your
electrical
consumption
multiplied by
the #hrs of
operation x
Electricity Rate
(Php/kwh)
System Current:
Use this to
calculate your
circuit breaker
size.
Usually multiply
by 2.5 for the
start-up.
EER: The
higher the
value the more
efficient
Air Flow:
If the aircon is
ducted-type,
the ducting
size will be
base on this.
Around 3 to 5
m/s air
velocity
Sound Level:
Comfortable is
40dB to 60dB
Power Supply:
Coordinate
this with your
electrical
engineer or
contractor.

Voltage: 220v,
380v, 400v, 440v

Phase: Single or
Three Phase

Frequency:
60Hz or 50Hz
Physical Data:
Use this for
the layout and
design of the
equipment
foundation.
TIP # 3
• Outdoor units (air-cooled condensers) should
be located outside the building with enough
space to dissipate heat to the environment.
Do not put it on basements and inside the
ceilings.
TIP # 4
• Provide enough space and access for repairs
and maintenance of the equipment,
refrigerant pipes, drain pipes and ducts.
TIP # 5
• For large aircon capacity starting from 50TR
(tons of refrigeration cooling), use chiller
water system and provide a chiller
room/pump room and cooling towers at the
roofdeck.
Summary
1. Use the quick calculation for regular room
construction only and for estimate purposes.
2. Always refer on the product catalogue for
details of the equipment.
3. Outdoor units should be located outside the
building.
4. Provide enough space and access for repairs
and maintenance.
5. Use chilled water system for large capacities.
