What ATEX means

The ATEX Directive ( 94/9/EC ) regulates that manufactures are forced to supply
ONLY properly certified electrial equipment to be used in potentially explosive
areas. From the workers perspective there is another ATEX Directive ( 99/92/EC )
that regulates the requirements for improving in the safety and health protection of
workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. This Directive is mandatory
since 1 st july 2003.

According to this last Directive each area needs to be classefied according to the
potential hazardous risk so that only appropriate certified equipment can be used
in there. With the old CENELEC ( previous Directive ) areas were divided into three
classifications : Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2, depending on the level of risk. These
areas can apper in potential hazardous atmospheres as explained on this image:

Now with the new ATEX Directive, every aera is classified by Category. Every
Category is associated to a type of
Zone. And every aera is classified according to the lenght of time where flameable
material can be present in there, as follows.

All electrical equipment should be classified according to these categories ( zone )

in order to certify in what areas it can be used.

How can I recognize if a light is correctly certified by ATEX

All lights certified by ATEX should have a code printed on its body. This code will
advice the user in what kind of area this light can be used whithout risk of
explosion.
