When you are done displaying the poster…

The positive effects of collaborative projects like this one are huge for
students. Students really see how important each and every student is when
working together on something of this nature. However, when it’s complete
it can be hard to know what to do with the poster (after you are done
displaying it of course).

Teachers have come up with so many creative ways to give away the final
poster when they are done displaying them. Teachers often come up with a
way to select one student using a raffle or contest of some kind.

Of course you can always keep it to use in the future but it’s so much more
fun to make a new one with each group of children year after year.

General Information
This art activity is intended to complement/supplement any lessons on Vincent van
Gogh or his famous artwork, Starry Night. This collaborative poster is the perfect
way to start a unit or to cap one off. It is an engaging and entertaining way for
students to work together to create a large poster of this famous artwork. The final
poster makes a great classroom focal point and a lasting example of collaboration
for your students.

There are two options so you can choose what works best for you and your
students. Both options are very easy. Each student is given one page of the famous
masterpiece to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets
are colored & cut out they are then assembled to reveal a large collaboration
mosaic/poster/mural of Starry Night!

Poster #1 - The colors have been assigned. Students will follow the colors
assigned using a color key on each page. (Pages 16-46)

Poster #2 - The colors have NOT been assigned. Let your students color the
poster whatever colors they want (or that you assign). (Pages 48-78)

However, you might also want to experiment with other mediums such as paint or pastels! If
you decide to use paints you will just want to copy/print the pages of the poster onto thicker
paper (card stock will work). Experiment with the materials you have and see what works!

Instructions
1. Print the poster pages you need from this resource.You will need to print either
poster option #1 (with colors assigned) OR poster option #2 (no colors assigned).
Select “fit to page” (or your printers variation of that setting). Test print one page
to be sure everything is printing correctly before you print all the pages.

2. Give each student a page to color. Each page is different and there are 30 in
total. The finished product makes a 5 x 6 grid (that is approx. 27 in. x 33 in.). Some
teachers like to show their students what they will be making and others like to
keep it a secret until the end for a really fun surprise!

3. Each page has instructions and a color key on it. Provide students with markers,
crayons or colored pencils to fill in their square with the corresponding color
stated on their handout (or however you have assigned colors if you are using
poster #2). Some pages have more to color than others so some kids will easily
be able to color two. Other pages have a lot of little details.You can use this to
differentiate and provide the appropriate experience for each child to achieve
success - be as creative as you want with this!

4. After students have colored in their square have them cut out the colored piece
as indicated by the scissors icons. Make sure students write the letter & number
that corresponds to their piece on the back (unless you are planning to have your
students assemble the poster like a puzzle without guidance).

5. Assemble the grid pieces to make your finished poster.

Use the grid reference page provided to assist with this.

Instructions
There are many ways you could put this poster together. I am sharing with you the way I have
found that works best. However, you could also...

• Cover your intended space (wall, bulletin board, door, etc.) in large butcher paper (any
color) and then glue or tape the pieces directly to the butcher paper. Glue stick works
best for this method.
• Cut out a piece of butcher paper to the size you need and then glue the pieces onto
the paper while it’s on a table or the floor and then put that paper with the poster
attached on your wall or bulletin board.
• Tape the pieces directly to your wall if you do not want to keep it after you are finished
displaying it.
• Staple the pieces directly to a bulletin board.

I like to put the tape on the back of the poster so it doesn’t show
on the front. I put the tape, sticky-side up, on 1/2 way and then I
line up the next piece and press them together.

6. After you have taped all the pieces
together, flip the poster over and run long
pieces of tape along all of the seams. This
will help strengthen the poster and make it
easier to move around, hang up and store
for later if you decide to do so. Masking
tape or a heavy tape works best.

7. GREAT JOB! Now you can display for all to see...

The final poster is approximately 27 in. x 33 in.
