Religious nationalism and secular nationalism are taken opposites due to difference in characteristics
i.e religious nationalism as backward, repressive, irrational and violent whereas secular nationalism is
depicted as modern, rational and liberal and peaceful. Both of these are depicted differently through
a value system of their beholders. This misunderstandings  further aggravate confusions b/w
religious nationalism and secular nationalism. In reality both are umbrella terms that include diverse
and divergent ideologies .This is actually, their different social and cultural context that makes them
varying. Formation of Turkish state in 1923 as secular state after collapse of Ottoman Empire,Muslim
role and culture was replaced with form of secularism by Atta Turk.It remained most secular country
by 1970 among all muslim countries. But the rampant inequality and sheer govt.corruption gave way
or rise to Islamist parties who managed to form coalition govt.by 1996.As a reaction secular officials
imposed a ban on symbol of Islam ie. head scarf .Women wearing hijab were not allowed to study at
university,a democratically elected woman parliamentarian Merve was not allowed to take oath as
she was covering her head and she was compelled to move out of the premises as her fellow secular
members of Assembly yelled at her and wanted her to  leave, afterwards her Turkish citizenship was
stripped off. These strict measures emboldened Islamist parties i.e current leader Recep T.Ordogan
Another example though USA is a secular state but it holds religious aspects even on its currency is
imprinted with 'In God we Trust',the pledge of allegiance includes the phrase 'one nation under
God' .Majority of US presidents were protestant Christians .Another antecedent  India is secular state
but over past few decades Hindu nationalists have gained power and the enacted reforms in
education and culture promote particular form of Hinduism and other religious minorities finding it
difficult to adjust..Ideology of Hinduvta...superiority of Hindus over others....Religious and secular
nationalism can only be understood well in their particular social and historical context.
