OBJECTIVE 4 Experimental Investigation
OBJECTIVE 5 Data Analysis & Making Conclusions

GRAPH QUESTION – 8 marks

An engineering student set up an experiment to investigate friction. The investigation is shown in the
diagram.

Method
1. The student put masses on the sledge and pulled it gently with a Newton metre, to measure the
force needed until it just started to move. (Force is measured in units called Newtons or N.)
2. The student recorded the force shown by the Newton metre which was needed to move the sledge.
3. Extra masses were then added to the sledge to make it heavier.
4. The student recorded the force needed to move the heavier sledge.
5. The student collected 5 sets of results, using different masses.

The results of the investigation are shown in the table.

Total mass of the

Force needed to move
sledge + additional
the sledge (N)
masses (gm)
2.4 10
2.8 11.5
3.2 13
3.6 14.5
4.4 17.5

a. Use the graph grid to draw a graph of the results, plotting MASS in grams against FORCE in
Newtons. (Decide what sort of graph is best and then decide whether mass or force should be
plotted on the ‘y’ or ‘x’ axes.)
