7.1 Installing OS Updates
In this chapter, you will learn about:
Recognise the importance of Operating System (OS) updates
Recognise ways to update the OS updates
Install OS updates using online and offline options
Install Service Packs for Windows 7 using online and offline
options.

7.2 Domain
The term domain can refer either to local subnetwork or to
descriptors for sites on the Internet.
On a LAN, a domain is a subnetwork made up of a group of
clients and servers under the control one central security
database.
Within a domain, users authenticate once to a centralized
server known as a domain controller, rather than
repeatedly authenticating to individual servers and services.
Individual servers and services accept the user based on the
approval of the domain controller.

7.2.1 Installing OS Updates
After OS is installed on a system the next important task is to
install all security updates.
Updates
Software updates, also known as patches, are released for a
variety of reasons.
A patch upgrades a piece of software to the latest version with
new features in the software.
An update will improve an application’s stability.
An update is issued to fix a bug or security hole within the
program.

Windows
Run Windows Update and follow the instructions for installing
any of the updates that may appear.
Need for OS Update:
The first version of any OS contains bugs and errors. As
people use the OS, new requirements keep coming up.

Security features are one of the key elements that always
need to be updated.
Not installing OS updates regularly can affect security of the
system.
It can result in loss of confidential information and even in
damage of all the data. Therefore, installing OS updates is
very important.

7.2.2. Windows Update:


Windows Update is a maintenance and support feature for
Windows OS components. Windows Update option is available
in Settings window. The feature helps in checking and
downloading updates released for the Windows OS to fix errors
or bugs and to improve the performance of the Windows
components.Microsoft provides this service for free.

Windows Updates are classified in four categories:


Optional
Featured
Recommended
Important

Windows updates can be configured to install either
automatically or manually. Windows 10 automatically downloads
and installs all updates. If a driver or update causes problems,
you can uninstall it and block Windows from downloading it
again.

7.2.3 Service Pack (SP)

A Service Pack (SP) is an upgrade suite that complements an


established OS and its software programs.

It is a set of applications with software improvement features


or security system to remove errors from system. An SP can
be considered as a set of updates and fixes packaged
together.

Companies often release a service pack when the number of


individual patches reach a certain limit.

An SP helps to keep Windows up to date.

7.3 File Sharing and Troubleshooting

7.3.1 File sharing and troubleshooting


Problem:
Cannot access shared folders or files
Reason:

The Computer Browser service is not started or is turned off


on one or more computers in the workgroup.
If File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks is not installed
or is blocked by Windows Firewall.

Start the Computer Browser service
From Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click
Manage.
Double-click Services and Applications.
Double-click Services.
On the right side, right-click Computer Browser, and then click
Start.
Close the Computer Management window.

7.3.2 Install File and Print Sharing and make sure that it is
not blocked by Windows Firewall Step
1: Install File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
From Start menu, run the command ncpa.cpl.
Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
Click the General tab, and then click Install.
Click Service, and then click Add.
In the Network Service list, click File and Print Sharing for
Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
Click Close.
Step 2:
Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is not blocked by
Windows Firewall.

Run the command firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
On the General tab, make sure that the Don’t allow exceptions
check box is not selected.
Click the Exceptions tab.
On the Exceptions tab, make sure that the File and Printer
Sharing check box is selected, and then click OK.
Troubleshooting Access Denied Error Message.
“Access Denied” or other errors when you access or work
with files and folders in Windows.

Reason:
The folder ownership has changed.
You do not have the appropriate permissions.
The file is encrypted.

7.3.3 Resolution for Windows 8


You may not have ownership of a file or folder If you recently
upgraded your computer to Windows 8 from an earlier version
of Windows, some of your account information may have
changed. Therefore, you may no longer have ownership of some
files or folders. You might be able to resolve this issue by
restoring your ownership of the files and folders.

To take ownership of a file or folder:
Right-click the folder and then click Properties.
On the Security tab, click Advanced and then click Change.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for
confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Type the name of the person that you want to give ownership
to, and then click Check Names.
Note: The account name for the person that you are assigning
ownership to is displayed.
Click OK.
If you want this person to be the owner of the files and
subfolders that are contained in this folder, select the Replace
owner on sub-containers and objects check box. Click OK.

You may not have the appropriate permissions Issues that


you experience when you try to access files and folders may be
related to permissions. Permissions are rules that determine
whether you can access or change files and folders.

To check permissions on a file or folder:
Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab.
Under Group or user names, click your name to see the
permissions that you have. To open a file, you have to have
the Read permission.
To change the permissions of a file or folder:
Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties. Click
the Security tab.
Under Group or user names, click your name to see the
permissions that you have.
Click Edit, click your name, select the check boxes for the
permissions that you must have, and then click OK.
Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to change
permissions on files and folders.
The file or folder may be encrypted Encryption can help
protect files and folders from unwanted access. You cannot open
an encrypted file or folder without the certificate that was used
to encrypt it.

To determine whether a file or folder is encrypted:
Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
Click the General tab, and then tap or click Advanced.

7.4 Office 365


What is Office 365?
Office 365 is a subscription-based service, which can be used
for file sharing purpose.

All the documents are stored on the cloud and changes made
to the documents are automatically synchronized on all devices.
In addition, the user can open and edit files when his computer
is not connected to the Internet. As soon as his computer is
online, the changes made to the files will be automatically synced
with the files stored on the cloud, making the latest changes
available to all the people who can access them. Offline Access

work? If you have your Windows 10 computer set up to sync files
with a network server, the Windows 10 Sync Center will allow
you to check the results of your recent sync activity.

The Windows 10 Sync Center is a tool for giving you access


to copies of your network files even when your computer is not
connected to the network.

files stored in folders on network servers when you are
connected.
To enable Offline access:

In the Control panel, click Sync Centre.


Click Manage Offline files.
Click Enable Offline files.

What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard Internet protocol
for sharing large files between computers on the Internet over
TCP/IP connections.
FTP is a client-server protocol that relies on two
communication channels between client and server. Using FTP,
a client can upload, download, delete, rename, move, and copy
files on a server.

FileZilla is a free FTP solution; it is a highly used FTP


application. It consists of FileZilla Client and FileZilla Server.
File Transfer Sites Sometimes you may have large file sizes
that cannot be shared as attachments with your normal Outlook
or emails. At such a time, it is good to share your files using free
file sharing sites like:

All these free file sharing sites have different size restrictions.
One of the most commonly used free file sharing site is
WeTransfer.
WeTransfer lets you upload files up to two GBs and needs
no registration. You can store files using WeTransfer but they
limit the storage period up to two weeks.
All you need is an email address (yours and the people that
you want to share the files with) and the files you want to share.
