Axolotl – Free Pattern

This Axolotl is part of an 101 Mini Crochet Pattern challenge.

Materials
Bulky Weight Chenille Yarn- Pink and Peach
5 mm crochet hook
9 mm safety eyes
Stitch marker
Darning needle
Scissors
Polyfill stuffing
Abbreviations

MR – Magic ring
Ch – Chain
Sc – Single crochet
Inc – Increase
Dec – Decrease
BLO – Back loop only
FO – Fasten off
(…) – Repeat the instruction inside these brackets the given number of times.
[…] – Total number of stitches at the end of the round.
Arms/Legs
Use Pink, make 4.

Round 1: 5 sc in MR. [5]

Rounds 2-3: 5 sc. [5] (2 rounds)

Round 4: Flatten and 2 sc across. [2]

Cut yarn and leave a tail to sew a few securing stitches after the legs are joined and to sew the arms
on the body.

Body
Use Pink. Stuff as you go.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]

Round 2: 6 sc. [6]

Round 3: (sc, inc) x 3. [9]

Round 4: 9 sc. [9]

Round 5: (2 sc, inc) x 3. [12]

Round 6: 12 sc. [12]

Round 7: (sc, inc) x 6. [18]

Round 8: sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, sc. [24]

Round 9: (Adding the feet- leave the tail hanging on the outside to add a few stitches to the body) 8 sc,
2 sc through the leg and body, 5 sc on the body only, 2 sc through the leg and body, 7 sc. [24]

Rounds 10-11: 24 sc. [24] (2 rounds)

Round 12: sc, dec, (2 sc, dec) x 5, sc. [18]

Rounds 13-14: 18 sc. [18] (2 rounds)

Add a few stitches along the body edge of the feet to hold them up.

Round 15: (4 sc, dec) x 3. [15]

Rounds 16-17: 15 sc. [15] (2 rounds)

Round 18: (3 sc, dec) x 3. [12]

Sew the arms on the body between rounds 17 and 18.

Continue onto the head.

Head
Use Pink. Stuff as you go.

Round 19: FLO, (sc, inc) x 6. [18]


Round 20: sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, sc. [24]

Round 21: (3 sc, inc) x 6. [30]

Rounds 22-23: 30 sc. [30] (2 rounds)

Round 24: (We start making the gills here) 14 sc, (change to peach) ch 5, starting in the 2nd chain
from the hook, sc, 3 hdc (on the last hdc, change back to pink), 14 sc, (change to peach) ch 5, starting
in the 2nd chain from the hook, sc, 3 hdc (on the last hdc, change back to pink), 2 sc. [30]

Round 25: (This round, skip over all the gills- make sure you twist them slightly as you crochet over
them) 30 sc. [30]

Note: The gills should be on the side of the head. Adjust if needed.

Round 26: (We start making the gills here) 14 sc, (change to peach) ch 5, starting in the 2nd chain
from the hook, sc, 3 hdc (on the last hdc, change back to pink), 14 sc, (change to peach) ch 5, starting
in the 2nd chain from the hook, sc, 3 hdc (on the last hdc, change back to pink), 2 sc. [30]

Round 27: (This round, skip over all the gills- make sure you twist them slightly as you crochet over
them) 30 sc. [30]

Insert eyes between rounds 24 and 25 with 6 visible stitches in between.

Round 28: (We start making the gills here) (3 sc, dec) x 3, (change to peach) ch 5, starting in the 2nd
chain from the hook, sc, 3 hdc (on the last hdc, change back to pink), (3 sc, dec) x 2, 3 sc (change to
peach) ch 5, starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, sc, 3 hdc (on the last hdc, change back to pink),
dec. [24

FO Peach.
Round 29: (This round, skip over all the gills- make sure you twist them slightly as you crochet over
them) sc, dec, (2 sc, dec) x 5, sc. [18]

Round 30: (sc, dec) x 6. [12]

Round 31: (dec) x 6. [6]

Cut yarn and weave the end through the remaining front loops.
