II. PROJECT SUMMARY

Hydroponic farming is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient

solutions known as Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) in water, without soil. This is an
alternative way to grow plants and vegetables which is more convenient, nature
friendly and can be well-managed in school like Bagbag Elementary School.

Bagbag Elementary School, continues support the implementation of

Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) of DepEd by planting different kinds of plants
and vegetables that can easily grow. The garden serves as learning laboratory for
practicum in Agriculture Component of subject area for Grade 4-6. The harvests
are used to augment other the School Feeding Program. For School Year 2022-
2023, there are 143 recipients of school based feeding. Occasionally, the
stakeholders are also provided with planting materials, concoctions, and harvests
for their Gulayan sa Tahanan, a modified version of Gulayan sa Paaralan Program
while learners are at homes due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Project LIKAS (Laging Ingatan, Kalikasan ating Sagipin) is envisage to be an

Income Generating Project (IGP) that will be used as source of fund for Gulayan sa
Paaralan(GPP) for its sustainability and purchase of seeds and other requirements.
As preparation of the school for the live animals such as native chickens and
rabbits. This IGP will serve as source of fund for raising these animals and other
school operation.
Project LIKAS shall be using the hydroponics system, which is a type of
growing plants without soil, instead of by using NFT which was learned by the
proponents from trainings and benchmarking. Materials like this set-up will be
procured from donations of generous private individuals. Produce from this project
will be sold to DepEd personnel, community members and other interested
individuals. The hydroponics garden installed beside FVR building where enough
sunlight reaches the plants. Growing the lettuce in hydroponics will take around
one and a half months before harvesting. Its estimated cost is Php1940, comprised
of 4 tuna Styrofoam boxes, 2 bottles solution (A and B), styro cups, cocopeat, a
pack of lettuce seeds.

III. PROJECT BACKGROUND

Bagbag Elementary School implements and supports the Gulayan sa Paaralan

Program. Agricultural practices to have optimum yield from the crops planted as
support to this national program were made but was not sustained because of
infertile soil and harmful insects that destroy the crops. There were also limited crops
which can be planted within the prepared plots within the school. Interventions to
these identified problems must be addressed in order to provide a sustainable income
as supplementary to the allotted MOOE of the school.

One of the alternative solutions to the infertile soil, unmanageable insects,

and limited variety of crops is by having a hydroponics school garden. The basic
concept of a hydroponic gardening is to substitute nutrient solutions that performs
the function of soil in giving the proper nutrition to the plants. The roots accessibility
and close contact to the source of nutrients and elimination of frequent watering are
some of the benefits, aside from increased yield and faster growth.

In pursuit for hydroponics gardening implementation, the best practices in

Pantay Matanda ES, school that implement hydroponics, was made. The school
head/teachers in-charge who become our school head initiated this alternative way
of growing plants and vegetables, the hydroponics and willingly shared the process
of hydroponics gardening.

Consultation with the Bagbag ES School was made if it was possible to have
hydroponics gardening project in the school. As an affirmation, the school head
helped in the procurement of the materials for the hydroponics gardening. Through
the fund from the stakeholders, the BES was able to start its trial hydroponics system
with lettuce as the main crop.

At present, the school has 12 hydroponics boxes set-up for lettuce growing
and these were fully utilized during the trial stage established on the last quarter of
2021 The harvests were sold and proceeds were used to purchase additional
materials upsizing the garden. After establishing its feasibility in the last six months
(Appendix A), the proponents had decided to pursue the Project LIKAS in response
to challenges identified. After two years of implementation, the proponents will
prepare action research to determine its impact on measurable parameters and a
localized handbook/manual on lettuce growing using the hydroponics technology for
division-wide use. A monitoring tool was adapted by the proponents, attached as
Appendix B.

IV. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Project LIKAS specifically aims to:

1. serve as learning laboratory for Grade 4-6 learners for Agriculture Component
of EPP/TLE;
2. provide an income generating project as additional source of fund for school’s
localized programs, projects and activities;
3. represent the modified Gulayan sa Paaralan Program that supplies organically
grown vegetables for the feeding program;
4. promote the benefits of soil-less agriculture in response to limited space,
unfertile soil and pest management;
5. prepare a research paper on the efficiency of the project and communicate
results; and
