2. Answer the following questions in relation to Australia’s government.

Questions
1. What do the following terms mean?
 Absolute majority

o a majority over all rivals combined, more than half.

 Hung parliament

o a parliament in which no political party has enough seats to secure an

overall majority:

 Minority government

o a government in which the governing party has most seats but still less

than half the total.

 Front Bencher

a member of the British Parliament or a similar legislative body who is a party leader,

cabinet minister, etc.

 Backbencher

a Member of Parliament who does not hold office in the government or opposition and

who sits behind the front benches in the House of Commons:

 Cabinet

a member of the British Parliament or a similar legislative body who is a party leader,

cabinet minister, etc.

2. What is required for a political party to ‘form government’?

A party must have a minimum of 750 members to be eligible to be registered for State elections, or a
minimum of 100 members to be eligible to be registered for local government elections.
3. In Federal parliament how long is the government elected for?

Three years

4. What is the role of the Prime Minister in the Australian parliament?

They have many roles, including chairing meetings in which the government discusses policies and
examines bills – proposed laws leading Cabinet – the Prime Minister and ministers – in deciding
government policy
