Ch.8- Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) and Antigen Processing and Presentation

1. Know what the MHC is, its function and its role in graft rejections
2. Know the structure of MHC class I and class II, be familiar with the cell types they are
expressed on or associated with.
3. Know how the MHC is inherited
4. Be familiar with the gene products of each MHC class
5. Know the chromosome location of human and mouse MHC
6. Be familiar with the anchor residues in peptides that are required for binding to the MHC
7. Distinguish between peptide binding in MHC I vs MHC II
8. Know how the MHC is regulated and be familiar with the role of MHC in disease
9. Be able to distinguish between antigen processing and presentation
10. Be familiar with the antigen presenting cells
11. Distinguish between the pathway for processing endogenous antigens and the
pathway for processing exogenous antigens
12. Be able to distinguish between antigen processing and presentation by both pathways
(fig 8.17 for overview, and fig. 8.23 for detailed steps).
13. Be familiar with the structure and function of TAP(transporter associated protein)
14. Know the roles of CLIP, HLA-DM, HLA-DO, calnexin, tapasin and the invariant chain (Ii).

Ch. 6 Complement

 Define the term complement.


1. Know the function of complement (see in slides and details of complement function notes)
and associated slides in lecture outline provided.
2. Be familiar with all the components of complement (i.e. they are designated C1-C9, the
factors, etc) and the steps of activation in the classical pathway.
3. What are the biological or physiological consequences of complement activation?
4. Be able to describe activation of complement by the classical pathway, (See fig. 7.5 also) and
alternative pathway.

5. Know the structure of C1 macromolecular complex and why it is significant.

16. Be familiar with the consequences or disorders that may occur as result of complement
deficiency in complement.

17. How is complement important in immunity?

18. Know how complement proteins are regulated


Be familiar with the effector functions of antibody (see blackboard notes on Antibody functions)

Ch.4 Cytokines

1. Define cytokines and know the functions of the major ones presented to you in Table 4-1.
a. know the cells that produce or secrete them and their targets and effects.

2. Be familiar with the structures of the interleukin-2(IL-2) cytokine receptor families, see figure
in slides and Fig. 4-8 and 4-9).

3. Be able to explain the JAK-STAT pathway of signal transduction, and how the pathway got
its name.

4. Know the role of cytokines in disease.

5. Be able to list and describe specific diseases or disorders related to cytokines, and the specific
cytokines that contribute to the disease.

6. Be familiar with cytokines used in clinical therapy as described in Table 1, Box 4-2 or in the
slide in notes.
