OLIVER TWIST: A SUMMARY

Oliver Twist is the title of a book by Charles Dickens. It is

about a boy named Oliver who was born in a workhouse in
England in the 1830s. His mother died when he was born.
The workhouse was a very cruel place, where the children
worked hard and did not have enough food. When Oliver
asked for more food, the man who managed the workhouse
sold him to a local businessman. Oliver had problems with
another boy who worked for the businessman. The boy said
nasty things about Oliver’s mother. The boys got into a fight
and Oliver ran away to London.

When he got to London, Oliver was tired and hungry. He met a

man who gave him a place to sleep. The man’s name was Fagin,
and he was a criminal who trained young boys to steal. Oliver did
not want to steal, but one day he went out with other boys in
Fagin’s gang. One of the boys took an expensive handkerchief
from a man called Mr. Brownlow. People accused Oliver of
stealing it, but Mr. Brownlow was very kind and took Oliver back
to his house, where Oliver lived very happily.

Fagin knew a man called Bill Sikes. Sikes was a thief who stole
things from people’s houses. One day, he and his girlfriend Nancy saw Oliver in the street. They captured him and took
him back to Fagin. Fagin forced Oliver to steal with Sikes. One night, they broke into the house of a woman named Mrs.
Maylie. During the crime, a servant shot Oliver but Sikes escaped. Oliver told Mrs. Maylie and her niece Rose about his
life. They felt sorry for him. Mrs. Maylie decided to take care of Oliver, but Fagin and a mysterious man named Monks
made a plan to kidnap him again. Nancy decided to tell Oliver about the bad men’s plan. She went to Mrs. Maylie’s
house and told Rose, but Sikes found out. He was very angry and killed Nancy.

Mrs. Maylie and Rose Took Oliver back to Mr.

Brownlow’s house. Oliver was surprised to find the
mysterious man named Monks there. Mr. Brownlow
forced Monks to tell Oliver the truth: Monks was Oliver’s
half-brother. They had the same father but different
mothers. Their father was very rich and Monks tried to
help Sikes capture Oliver because he did not want to
share the family money. Mr. Brownlow forced Monks to
give Oliver the money. In the end, the police arrested
Fagin and Mr. Brownlow adopted Oliver. Oliver, Mr.
Brownlow and the Maylies went to live happily in the
countryside.
