NARRATIVE REPORT ON ADOLESCENT

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

Prepared by:

GINA I. LANDERIO
ARH Coordinator
I. INTRODUCTION

Adolescence is generally defined as being the time between puberty and reaching adult
independence with the age range included most commonly being from 10 to 19 years.Puberty is
considered a key element in human development into adulthood, yet this marker of physical
maturity is occurring at earlier ages in many settings, accompanied by an earlier of sexual
attention, sexual thoughts and expirementation.Understanding and managing puberty in
childhood, well before what has been considered “adolescence” requires urgent attention. For
girls this management is often focused on their experience of menarche.Menstrual health is an
area which has focused attention on the reproductive health needs of girls and young
women, with growing body of literature documenting successful interventions in schools. There is
also a recognition of the importance of support for menstruation support and management
which includes boys and young men to heighten their awareness and sensitivity to the issues,
so that their attitudes and behavior do not promote the exclusion from school of girls
experiencing their periods. The inclusion in policy discussions and interventions that the
reproductive health concerns of girls and boys, young women and young men, are interlinked
beyond males being viewed as sexually dominant , helps in the recognition of the sexual health
uncertainties that boys as well as girls face in adolescence and beyond.Teenagers and
adolescents around the world continue to face many challenges and issues, mainly because
they lack the ability to understand what is happening at this stage in their lives.although it
maybe difficult for older people to understand these changes,it is important that parents and
teachers try not to lose them or neglect them because of their immaturity. Many teenagers need
guidance and support from family members and friends, but others turn into victims of society
without proper education.Adolescents have a high burden of sexual and reproductive health
problems and it is important to reach out to youth groups through health promotion initiatives.
On the other hand,Reproductive Health is defined as a state of physical, mental, and social
well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system, at all stages of life. Good
reproductive health implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, the
capability to reproduce  and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so. Men and
women should be informed about and have access to safe, effective, affordable, and acceptable
methods of family planning of their choice, and the right to appropriate health-care services that
enable women to safely go through pregnancy and childbirth.

IV.SUGGESTIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSIONS

Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) is one of the neglected health and hygiene
issues surrounding the rights of vulnerable women and girls in some of the remote and
isolated areas, this natural monthly occurrence is disruptive.Women and girls often deal
with the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products or if they are available the sharp
rise in the price of sanitary pads makes it impossible to buy due to poverty.Stigma and
period poverty has significant impact on the lives of vulnerable women and girls who
often have to resort to using unhygienic alternatives such as using dried leaves and
dirty old clothes as sanitary pads. This causes discomfort that can increase their risks of
infections –especially since they often washed without detergents and dried indoors, out
of shame without detergents and fear of superstitions related to menstruation.
Without improved hygiene behavior such as handwashing with soap and waater after
changing used clothes and sanitary napkins it will be challenging for women and girls to
stay healthy during their menstrual cycle.
To address the persistent issues of health and hygiene partnered with DepEd,DOH and
other partnersadvocate to support improved hygiene behavior among girls and
women. As much as possible there must be a continued support and distribution of free
hygiene kits including sanitary napkins and sanitary towels and spread messages to
combat stigma to all girls and women in schools who already have their monthly period.
With these advocacies sponsors and partners are encouraged to continue spreading
generosities as needs arise.Because every girls deserves the right to dignity.
