FILM-MAKING
A
In the 1920s, new technology allowed filmmakers to attach to each film a soundtrack of speech,
music and sound effects synchronized with the action on the screen. These sound films were
initially distinguished by calling them talking pictures, or talkies. The next step in the development
of cinema was the introduction of colour. While the addition of sound to film revolutionized the
medium, quickly driving out silent movies, colour was adopted more gradually.

B
The public was relatively indifferent to colour photography as opposed to black-and-white. But as
colour processes improved and became as affordable as black-and-white film, more and more
movies were filmed in colour after the end of World War II, as the industry in America came to
view colour an essential to attracting audiences in its competition with television, which remained a
black-and-white medium until the mid-60s. By the end of the 1960s, colour had become the norm
for filmmakers.

C
Nowadays, the latest and major influence in film making is cybernetics, to the point that the use of
computing in the creation of films has become essential. Special effects have been greatly
improved. They include the creation of animated characters interacting with real ones played by
actors or simply completely animated film which have improved the cartoon version of old Disney
productions. We are also impressed by the 3D (Three Dimension) remakes of old films which soon
become a newly released success that keeps the atmosphere of original versions. Of course, we can
watch them at the cinema or at home in a DVD version or on the internet.

Task A : Match the headings to the paragraphs

1 A SLOW BUT EFFECTIVE CHANGE.

2 THE GREATEST STEP.

Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.
