Artificial Synapse for Brain-Like Computing
 A team of scientists from Bengaluru’s Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced
Scientific Research (JNCASR) have developed a low energy consuming, high-
speed tech that has brain-like computing capability.
 For this, they used scandium nitride, a semiconducting material with supreme
stability to develop brain-like computing.
 Traditional computers have physically separated memory storage and processing
units.
 They take enormous energy and time to transfer data between these units during
an operation.
 In contrast, the synapse (the junction between two neurons) in the human brain
serves as both a processor and a memory storage device.
 This was making it a superior biological computer that is both smaller and more
effective.

First Gamma-Ray Eclipses

 Scientists have discovered the first gamma-ray eclipses from a special type of
binary star system using data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.
 These so-called spider systems each contain a pulsar and rapidly rotating
remains of a star that exploded in a supernova – that slowly erodes its companion.
 Spider systems develop because one star in a binary evolves more swiftly than its
partner.
 A binary system is one in which two stars orbit around a common centre of mass,
that is they are gravitationally bound to each other.
 Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars.
 They are extremely dense stars composed almost entirely of neutrons and having
a diameter of only 20 km (12 miles) or less.
 They emit concentrated streams of radiation far across the space.

Medium-density amorphous ice
 Scientists discovered a new form of ice that more closely resembles liquid water
than any other.
 The new form of ice is amorphous.
 In the ordinary crystalline ice, the molecules arrange themselves in a regular
pattern.
 But in amorphous ice, the molecules are in a disorganized form that resembles a
liquid.
 Though it is named as ice, its molecular structure is close to water.
 Amorphous means no clear state.
 It is neither water nor ice and hence amorphous ice.
 While warmed and then recrystallized, amorphous ice releases an extraordinary
amount of heat.
 The heat energy released is very high that it may cause ice quakes.
 Ice quakes are common in planets like Saturn and Jupiter.

Ring around Quaoar

 Scientists have detected a ring encircling Quaoar dwarf planet akin to the one

recorded crash of an aubrite.
 The First one was on December 2, 1852, in Basti, Uttar Pradesh.
 Worldwide, aubrites have crashed in at least 12 locations since 1836, including

 Meteors are pieces of some solid object in space that broke away, descended onto
a planet or moon, and managed to reach the surface.
 Once they reached surface, they are called meteorites.

Origin of basalts on Moon

 Moon’s dark regions that are visible to the naked eye, known as the ‘mare’.
 They are remnants of a violent history of the Solar System.
 There are no records, though, of these frenzied events on Earth.
 The large mare regions on the near side of the Moon, that can be seen from Earth,
mainly consists of basalts comprising volcanic rocks.
 These regions hold the key to how the Moon cooled and evolved.
 They also providing information on what were the sources of heat that melted
and crystallised the material to the present-day rocks.
 The Apollo, Luna, and Chang’E-5 missions have brought to Earth an extensive
collection of mare basalts.
 Apollo mare basalts date back to the age of 3.8–3.3 Ga (Ga is one billion years).
 ISRO stated the calculations show that these basalts must be a result of low-
pressure melting in the Moon.
 Further, they also reveal that these basalts originated from a cool, shallow, and
compositionally distinct part of the lunar interior.
 The Moon's interior melted in the form of basalt magmatism from as early as 4.3
- 3.9 Ga globally.
 The potassium, rare earth elements, and phosphorous rich zone of moon known
as Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT). This PKT region formed as later as 3.8-3.0
Ga.

Moon Venus Jupiter Conjunction
 The Moon, Venus, and Jupiter came together in a synchronized celestial dance
in the skies across the world.
 The three heavenly bodies formed a triangle-like shape in the night sky as they
came closer to each other.
 The conjunction was, however, short-lived as the Earth rotated on its axis.
 currently Venus is the 3rd-brightest natural body in the sky, after the sun and
moon.
 It is so dazzlingly bright that at times it can even be spotted in daylight.

Mandatory Minimum Sentences

 A CJI Chandrachud-led bench has decided to examine a petition challenging
mandatory minimum sentencing in case of gangrape of a minor below the age of
12.
 Mandatory minimum sentencing refers to "a sentence which must be imposed
without leaving any discretion to the court."
 It prescribes a ‘minimum mandatory sentence’ of life imprisonment for the
remainder of the convict’s life and even death.
 This concept comes primarily from the Canadian and American legal systems.
 In India, such sentences are prescribed for all sexual offenses under the
Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act except the offense of
sexual harassment.
 Under Section 8 of the POCSO Act, a punishment of 3-5 years has been
prescribed for offenses under Section 7 which deals with offenses of sexual
assault against children.
 The Criminal Law Amendment Act Of 1983 was the first instance of ‘mandatory
minimum punishment’ being prescribed.
 It says seven years for general rapes and ten years for aggravated cases which
could include rapes of minors below 12 years, and pregnant women.
 While the maximum punishment or life imprisonment for both was stipulated as
14 years.
 The 2013 reforms also updated the definition of ‘life imprisonment’ to mean the
entire remainder of the convict’s life and introduced a minimum sentence of 20
years for gang rape.
