ANXIETY

We all use the term anxiety. It is a term used in psychology and medicine with precise meanings.
While anxiety is a normal emotion, it can sometimes lead to uncomfortable symptoms and even
full-blown anxiety disorders. Fortunately, nowadays, we know how to deal effectively with these
problems.

WHAT IS ANXIETY
Anxiety is a normal human emotion that we are all familiar with. But sometimes, it can cause
problems and even give rise to real disturbances. Anxiety has evolved by changing meaning over
time and acquiring a negative value. Originally the term 'anxiety' did not indicate something
unpleasant. It was an agitated emotion - negative or positive - associated with the anticipation of
something. For example, the girl waiting for her beloved to return home could be anxious.

THE SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

Anxiety is an emotion that is felt both in the body and mind. We can distinguish the symptoms of
anxiety into two different categories: physical (or somatic) symptoms and mental (or cognitive)
symptoms. The physical symptoms are related to the sympathetic system's manifestation of anxiety
in the body. In contrast, the mental symptoms make references to thoughts typical of anxiety.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

 Tachycardia (heartbeat)
 Fast breathing
 Hot flashes
 Stomach problems
 Sweating
 Chest constriction
 Need to go to the bathroom
 Vertigo
 Tremor
 Tight muscles
 Stomach blockage
 Lack of air

MENTAL SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANXIETY

 Performance anxiety
 Anticipatory anxiety
 Social anxiety

ANXIETY AND CATASTROPHIC INTERPRETATIONS

All people develop, more or less deliberately, a 'naive' theory about their functioning and the
functioning of the mind based mostly on sensations and emotions. People suffering from severe
anxiety are often led, under the guidance of the anxiety itself, to develop catastrophic thoughts
about the potential effects of the sensations they experience.
1. fear of going crazy
2. fear of losing control
3. fear of having a heart attack
ANXIETY DISORDERS
 Separation anxiety disorder
 Selective mutism
 Specific phobia
 Social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
 panic disorder
 Agoraphobia

CURE FOR ANXIETY

First, we must say that anxiety is a normal and harmless human emotion. Harmless in the sense
that it cannot cause you physical harm – which many people with some anxiety disorder strongly
believe. Despite this, it is an emotion that can become very problematic. Living with anxiety can
lead you to avoid many situations, perform less at work, and give up many things in your private
life.
Anxiety is not a disease, so it is wrong to talk about a cure for it. We need to understand the
problem of which anxiety is a mere symptom. Depending on the type of problem, there are more
suitable and effective solutions.

SELF-HELP TIPS FOR ANXIETY

If you want to learn how to manage anxiety even without professional help, you can try to maintain
regular meal and sleep-wake routines. Practice sports, meditate, and learn relaxation techniques -
even slow or diaphragmatic breathing is enough.
Start paying attention to your thoughts when you're anxious and get into the habit of questioning
them somewhat as you would in an argument in which you evaluate how accurate the other
person's opinions are.

Learn to be careful of the situations you avoid and try to deal with them a little at a time, giving
yourself time to get used to a problem that makes you anxious before walking away. This isn't
easy, but it is the most useful thing.
