CHAPTER 1
Introduction

Background of the study:

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the use of technology in
education. With the growing availability of electronic devices such as tablets, educators are
exploring new ways to engage students and enhance the learning experience. In the
Philippines, the Department of Education has launched various initiatives to integrate
technology into the curriculum, including the use of tablets in the classroom. Pansol
Integrated National High School is one of the schools that have implemented this initiative,
providing tablets to their Grade 12 students.
However, the effectiveness of this approach remains to be evaluated. While
proponents argue that the use of tablets can improve learning outcomes, critics contend
that it may distract students and lead to a decline in traditional academic skills such as
handwriting. Therefore, this study seeks to assess the effectiveness of having a tablet to
Grade 12 students of Pansol Integrates National High School.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of tablet use on student performance,
engagement, and attitudes toward learning. By investigating the benefits and drawbacks of
this approach, the study can inform educational policies and practices that seek to
integrate technology into the classroom.

Objectives:
1. To asses the efficiency of employing tablets to improve academic performance of
grade 12 students of Pansol Integrated National High School.
2. To determine the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing tablets in the learning
process of Pansol Integrated National High School's grade 12 students.
3. To investigate the influence of tablet use on the teaching and learning processes of
Pansol Integrated National High School's grade 12 students.
4. To explore grade 12 students' attitudes and views about using tablets in the
classroom.
5. To compare the academic achievement of grade 12 students who utilize tablets in the
learning process vs those who do not.
6. To make suggestions to the school administration on how to successfully incorporate
the usage of tablets in the teaching and learning processes of Pansol Integrated
National High School's grade 12 students.
Significance of the study:
This research will provide the effects of tablets given by the government in the
academic performance of grade 12 students, as well as the benefits of tablet usage on the
teaching styles of teachers at Pansol Integrated National High School.
Through this research, students, teachers, and parents will further realize the
effects, benefits and plans of action needed to enhance students of PINHS. The following
benefits might be stated in this study, which helps us to understand the issue or effects of
giving tablets to grade 12 students:

TEACHERS - this study will help teachers to facilitate the way of teaching or even in
giving tasks, the way of teaching will also be more flexible because of the advance
information that can be obtained and the management of time because of the easier way to
teach.

STUDENTS - this research will greatly benefit students for more advanced
knowledge and an effective way of learning. This study will also help the students to attend
their class regularly since this will provide information about the benefits that they can
acquire in attending schools and by the tablets that are given to them.

PARENTS - this study also appreciates the insight and concern of parents for their
child's education. Parents, or even their guardians, could encourage them to go to school
and attend their classes.

Review of Related Literature:

The integration of technology in education has become an increasingly popular
topic over the recent years. One of the most widely used technology in education student
engagement, improving student learning outcomes, and facilitating personalized learning
experiences. With the increasing demand for digital education in schools, the use of tablets
has become a priority in many educational institutions all over the world.
Tablets have been found to offer a variety of benefits in education, including access
to a wide range of learning resources, increased interactivity, portability, and flexibility.
Additionally, they have been seen to improve student performance, enable
effective communication, and support the development of digital literacy skills. The use of
tablets in high schools has been found investigated in various studies. For instance, a study
conducted by Law, Wong, and Huang (2019) examined the impact of tablet use on the
academic performance of high school students in Hong Kong.
The study found that students who used tablets had significantly higher academic
achievements compared to those who did not. Similarly, a study by Serhan and Altin (2018)
investigated the impact of iPads on the academic performance and motivation of high
school students in Turkey. The research revealed that the use of iPads had a positive effect
on the motivation and academic performance of students. The integration of tablets in the
Philippine education system has also been studied.
According to a report by the Philippine Star (2020), the Department of Education
in the Philippines has allocated funds to provide tablets to students in public schools to
support their distance learning needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moreover, the thoughts, attitudes, and views of the students about the utilization
of tablets in learning were likewise explored through a different reviews. From the
discoveries of Hakon Dündar, Murat Akçayir (2014), it demonstrates that understudies
have an inspirational perspective toward tablets computers. The students' attitudes
toward tablet PCs were unaffected by how long they had used computers and the internet.
Furthermore, a survey conducted in 2014 by Zehra Kucukaydin, Aykut Emre
Bozdogan, and Pinar Ozturk found that 95% of students supported the use of tablet
computers in science classes despite the fact that four out of five students did not have a
computer and nearly half of them did not frequently use a computer. With the help of tablet
computers, students realized that science subjects would be more enjoyable and easier to
understand, that they would solve problems like bringing books, and that they would do
better research on a subject.
On the other hand, according to a survey conducted by Muharrem Duran and Tufan
Aytac (2016), it was discovered that most pupils access the Internet via tablets. Students
said that teachers encourage pupils to use tablets for studying and teaching, and that the
content presented on them supports the themes covered in textbooks. The students also
concurred that the use of tablets hinders teacher-student connection. The majority of
students claimed that even when learning is being done on tablets, they do not learn more
fast or readily, they have some trouble grasping some concepts, learning is not lasting, and
it does not raise their level of achievement. The majority of students claimed that after
using tablets for extended periods of time to study, they experience physical side effects
including headaches and radiations.
Additionally, prior to the use of tablet computers in education, all participating
students expressed a positive attitude, according to a survey conducted by Ali Semerci
(2018). However, students claimed that after only a brief period of time spent using the
tablet computers, they observed an impact on interactions between students and teachers.
The Educational Information Network (EBA) Portal's educational content, according to a
significant number of students, was inadequate and inappropriate for their level.
Additionally, the students voiced a number of concerns regarding the teaching and
learning process. The present study aims to explore the students' attitudes and views about
the use of tablets in classroom and to investigate the effectiveness of having a tablet in
enhancing the academic performance of grade 12 students of Pansol Integrated National
High School. By exploring the use of tablets in the classroom, this study aims to contribute
to the existing literature on the use of technology, especially tablets, in education.
