CHAPTER I
Introduction

Background of the Study

In order for their well-being to stay focus and function naturally, a
good and healthy sleep is essential. It is said that an average adolescent
requires eight hours of sleep each night (Okano et al., 2019). It is ideal for
their health so that their body would reach its full capacity. Sleep deprivation
occurs when a proper amount of sleep is not being met. It can have a negative
effect on them both physically and mentally. Lack of sleep can drain their
energy and impairs brain functions such as memory and decision-making
resulting on getting distracted and out of focused.
In today's case where blended learning are being implemented due
to increasing amount of COVID-19 cases. Most of the students are prone
from experiencing sleep deprivation. One of the reasons behind this is getting
confused on the schedule between their face-to-face classes, and online
classes in addition the heaping amount of academic requirements. Without a
proper amount of sleep it can affect the student's attentiveness, creativity, and
the ability of being focused causing a bad performance academically.
This study offers a solution to the time-consuming and sleep
depriving system of the blended learning curriculum through helping both
teachers and student lessen their labor, This approach promotes a new healthy
way learning both physical and mental that way students could learn more
effectively. It will also help the students to manage their time and submit
their requirements upon the agreed date of deadline.

Statement of the Problem

This study will provide insights into how sleep deprivation can
affect on students academic performance during the implementation of
blended learning. Moreover, this sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age
1.2 Gender

2. What are the impacts of blended learning to students?

3. What are the percieved actions to reduce the effect of sleep

deprivation on the academic performance of the students?

4. Is there a significant relationship between sleep deprivation and

the implementation of blended learning?

Significance of the Study

Conducting this study might benefit the to the following:

Teachers - To raise awareness of teachers on their students current

mental state.

Students - Applying beneficial ways to their routine to prevent

sleep deprivation to happen.
Parents/Guardian - Monitoring the students nightly routine to
possibly prevent sleep deprivation

Reasearchers - Taking notes on the contents of the research to

help prevent sleep deprivation from happening to ourselves

Future researchers - This research will provide a reference

material and ideas to apply on their research for future researchers to use

Scope and Delimitations

This study covers the effects on the academic performance of

Senior high-school students during the blended learning at Parang High
School in the school year 2022-2023. To accomplish this, a look at their
mental and physical being is necessary, for these may have an impact on their
academic performances. This project will only cover Senior high-school
students - Senior high school tend to be more open-minded than Grade 10
student.

The study is delimited to teachers and Grade 10, The

information gathered with regards to sleep deprivation was used inorder to
plot and identify the suitable solutions which is highly dependent on the
characteristics of the area.

This study will only apply to students at Senoir High School.

Personal and sensitive information regarding respondents will not be
