TOEIC WRITING
Question: Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult. Do you think
adventure tourism in unexplored parts of the world should be encouraged?
Read the sample essay and complete the first body paragraph.
Adventure tourism in remote and exotic landscapes is gaining popularity in recent years. As far as I am concerned,
adventure tours should be promoted despite some of its shortcomings.
Body 1
(1)......................................... (2) ........................... For instance, wild animals and their habitats may be disturbed by loud noises or
the improper disposal of trash from tourism activities. Moreover, it is dangerous for travelers to engage in this form of travel.
(3)........................... As a result, possible accidents may unexpectedly happen and injure participants.
However, there are many reasons why adventure tourism is appealing to travelers. To begin with, adventure tourism
helps people gain a sense of accomplishment. Regardless of age and size, taking on an adventure can create feelings
associated with personal achievement. The more difficult the trek and the greater the challenge, the more sense of
personal achievement a tourist will feel when he accomplishes those goals. Besides, extreme tourism guarantees a
once-in-a-lifetime experience. It provides tourists with a great opportunity to see pristine places on Earth with their
own eyes and engage in cultural exchange activities with local inhabitants whom they would otherwise never have
had a chance to get to know. A traveler will also able to relive these memorable moments in vivid detail and cheer
himself up whenever he feels miserable in life.
To conclude, even though taking an adventure into the unknown can leave certain impacts on nature and carry some
risks to participants, I would argue that it should be encouraged because it gives travelers a sense of achievement and
unique experience. 19
