BIGONG PAG-ASA

BY LEONA FLORENTINO

"Bigong Pag-asa" is a poem written by Leona Florentino, a renowned poet and feminist from the
Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. The poem is about a woman who has lost all hope of
finding true love and happiness. And shows us that we should love ourselves first before giving our
whole life to someone whom we can’t assure that the love that will be given back is the same love as the
love we give. I reflect this poem to myself, that first I should love myself first before the others, because
as what they say, you cannot give what you do not have.

But in this poem we should love unconditionally and selflessly, wherein we do not assume any return.
That even those person cannot give back the same love we should still believe that there is someone
whom God had already reserved for us and they have a right person came in our life . As I read the
poem, I feel pain by the depth of emotions that Leona Florentino was able to convey through her words.
The woman in the poem is filled with sadness and despair, and she feels as though she will never find
the love and happiness she desires.

What I have learned in this poem , that we should not push ourselves to someone who don’t want to
accept our company, for you are not only wasting your time and effort, but you are also wasting your life
to someone who is not worth it with it. All we have to do is just to move on and keep life going for there
will be someone who will worth the worth.
