Block 4: Tableau access

Tableau is a very user-friendly data visualisation tool allowing you to conduct business
analytics.
After completing this block, you should be able to:
 recognise how Tableau is used in data visualisation
 apply the essential functions of Tableau to summarise a dataset.

Download Tableau Desktop for free


Students are eligible to download Tableau Desktop for free enabling you to gain valuable
data skills.
Visit https://www.tableau.com/academic/students.
Choose the 'verify by school credentials' option and fill out the information using your
University of London email address. When you fill in the school name select 'University of
London: Online Library', as shown in the picture below:
You can also use the ‘verify using document review’ option. You will need to select
‘University of London’ as your institution.
To do this you can send a scan/picture of your student card or acceptance letter. We are
working with Tableau to get the ‘verify by school credentials’ option working.

Upon launching Tableau, you will reach the start page. This page serves as the central
starting point when using Tableau. From here you can connect to data, open previous
workbooks, discover sample workbooks, gather information from resources, or view the Viz
of the week.

Tableau provides free training videos to help you become familiar with the software. You are
recommended to watch the following sections in particular:
o Getting Started (3 videos)
o Visual Analytics (22 videos)
o Dashboards and Stories (8 videos)
o Calculations (16 videos)
o Why is Tableau Doing That? (5 videos)
o How To (10 videos)
You are encouraged to share your experiences of Tableau with your peers using
the discussion forums.

Summative coursework
ST2187 Business analytics, applied modelling and prediction has diversified assessment with
(i) a 30%-weighted piece of coursework which requires the use of Tableau, and (ii) a 70%-
weighted two-hour unseen written examination.
