THE PSYCHOSOCIAL STAGES

1. Basic Example of Trust vs. Mistrust

Let’s say a mother feeds her baby in the morning. The next time the child is hungry, they will cry
in the hopes that the mother will hear the cry and feed the child again. If the mother succeeds
in fulfilling the child’s needs, trust will grow stronger. If the mother fails to feed the child, their
hopes will be dashed and mistrust may start to form. When we cannot hold onto hope, we can
quickly feel lost or helpless.

2. AUTONOMY VERSUS SHAME AND DOUBT: "A child in the autonomy versus shame and doubt
stage aims to achieve autonomy by doing things for him or herself. If parents do not allow
this, then the result is shame and doubt on the part of the child."

3. If the child is placed in an environment where he/she can explore, make decisions, and initiate
activities, they have achieved initiative. On the other hand, if the child is put in an environment where
initiation is repressed through criticism and control, he/she will develop a sense of guilt.

4 For example, being praised by your art teacher for the quality of artwork you create is a scenario that
promote the feeling of industry. If a child fails to develop a sense of industry, they will feel a sense of
inferiority in relation to his peers who have mastered this task.

5.Who am I?  What career do I want?  What do I believe in?  How should I dress
today?  Whom will I hang out with?

These questions and similar ones run through the minds of adolescents transitioning
into adulthood through what theorist Erik Erikson identified as Stage 5 of
psychosocial development: Identity versus role confusion. The identity versus role
confusion stage is a turning point in human development during which adolescents
from roughly the ages of 12 to 20 years try to understand and invent who they are by
testing out different versions of themselves in different social situations. Identity
formation begins to develop as the adolescent explores greater independence,
testing limits, and making their own choices about a career, values, beliefs, and
goals. Self-confidence is gained through the experiences of facing and overcoming
these new challenges of life
Role Confusion
 Being unsure of who you are and where you fit.
 Drifting from one job or relationship to another.
 Feeling disappointed and confused about your place in life.
Identity versus role confusion is the fifth psychological conflict in Erik Erikson's psychosocial development
theory. It occurs during adolescence and marks a period where an individual explores who they are as a
person.

6. Those who have intimacy are successful in their ability to open up to others about their lives and
ability to have personal, romantic relationships. Examples of isolation include depression, lack of close
friends, separation from family, and loneliness.

What is meant by intimacy versus isolation?

Intimacy is where deep relationships can be formed because people are vulnerable to
adulthood, from young adulthood to later on in life. Isolation is when people don't foster
relationships, and they socially isolate themselves, consequently leading to feelings of
loneliness.

7. The basic virtue of generativity vs. stagnation is "care." This involves caring for others who are close to the
person (family, co-workers, friends, etc.) as well as caring for the community or the future generation as a
whole. If generativity is not developed, rejectivity, or a lack of meaning in one's life and in one's actions, can
occur.

8.What is the difference between ego integrity and despair?

Ego integrity versus despair is the eighth and final stage of Erik Erikson's stage theory of psychosocial
development. This stage begins at approximately age 65 and ends at death. It is during this time that we
contemplate our accomplishments and can develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life.

What is the most important event in ego integrity vs Despair?

The most important event at this stage is coming to accept one's whole lifeand reflecting on
that life in a positive manner. According to Erikson, achieving a sense of integrity means fully
accepting oneself and coming to termswith the death.
