INTRODUCTION TO ISO 9000/14000 STANDARDS

International Organization for Standardization

A number of organizations have taken the lead to set, monitor and manage these standards. The
most influential group that monitors global standards is the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO). The ISO helps define a consensus among participating groups, such as
national standards institutes from over 160 counties and various industry associations

The International Organization for Standardization is an international standard-setting body

composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. Founded on 23
February 1947, the organization promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial
standards. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and works in 164 countries.
nd healthcare.

The use of the standards aids in the creation of products and services that are safe, reliable and of
good quality. The standards help businesses increase productivity while minimizing errors and
waste. By enabling products from different markets to be directly compared, they facilitate
companies in entering new markets and assist in the development of global trade on a fair basis.
The standards also serve to safeguard consumers and the end-users of products and services,
ensuring that certified products conform to the minimum standards set internationally.

ISO has a number of benefits:

 For Organizations:
 Improve Company and product quality
 Increase Customer Satisfaction
 Through Quality objectives and procedures, management and employees should
be able to focus on what’s important.
 Each and everyone has their roles and responsibility defined.
 Provide continuous assessment and improvement
 For Customers:
 Product with improved quality and reliability
 Timely delivery
 Cost saving
 Data protection
 Third-party audit helps to ensure a proper verification process in place.
Five Core Principles OF ISO
ISO standards are based on five key principles:
1. Response to Needs: ISO develops standards only when requested by an industry, a
consumer group or other stakeholders. In most cases, these groups contact its national
member association, which then forwards the request to ISO.
2. Global Expert Opinion: Experts and committees from across the world discuss and
negotiate all aspects of an ISO standard before it is approved.
3. Multi-Stakeholder Process: In addition to experts and committees, there are consumer
associations, academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government
bodies involved.
4. Consensus: ISO standards are developed only in a consensus-based environment.
Comments from all stakeholders are always taken into account before a standard is
finalized.
