STUDENT INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT HANDBOOK

TO THE STUDENT
The Faculty has incorporated work related learning in all its undergraduate degree
programmes. This is in part fulfilment of the requirements of the degree program that
each student should have industrial exposure during the course of the degree program
for a period ranging between nine to twelve months. This important programme
presents exciting opportunities and experience to the student, the university, the
employers and the community at large.
Industrial exposure not only compliments and solidifies your academic studies, but
also has the potential to shape your career prospects. Industrial Attachment will give
you a chance to start meaningful hands-on experience in your chosen profession and
contribute productively to the operations of the company hosting you, to network in
the business space and to test the professional waters and probably help you to evaluate
your personal career goals. It will give you a chance to market yourself through
productive performance. Most importantly you must appreciate that the company, by
giving you this attachment opportunity, is contributing to your professional training
and that industry at large is a strategic partner in this regard.
This booklet is meant to inform you on what is required of you during the course of
your attachment. You are advised to keep it for the Duration of your attachment
period.

NOTES
1. OPPORTUNITY FOR ATTACHMENT
While the opportunities for getting an industrial attachment are challenging at the
moment due to the national economic challenges being experienced, the ILO and
Departmental Coordinator will make every effort to help you get attached to
industry for industrial exposure. Students are reminded that getting attached
depends on various factors such as, the ability of industry to absorb interns, how
well you are prepared to compete in the labour market place (you are in contention
with other students from other Universities) and the labour market in general.
However, the onus is on the student to be proactive in looking for their preferred
placement. Students should have CVs readily available with their respective
Department Secretary. The ILO will distribute these on request to various companies
who will invite students for interviews.
2. INTERVIEWS for attachment placements
Most companies will take students for attachment based on entry interviews where
students will be competing with their peers from the UZ and those from other
Universities. Students should therefore be presentable to prospective companies,
submit professionally written CVs. You therefore need to be presentable, have the
right etiquette and your ability to be articulate in the interview.
3. STUDENT ATTACHMENT CONFIRMATION FORM
All students should collect attachment confirmation form from the ILO’s office
before they leave for the vacation. This form should be completed and sent to the
Faculty (e-mail, post, registered courier e.t.c), not later than 2 weeks after getting
attachment.
4. INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT ALLOWANCES
It’s the prerogative of most companies to offer students allowances for transport
and other expenses. Students should note that attachment is not about
money/allowances. It is an investment in your future career. This may mean
forgoing lucrative allowances

5. STUDENT ATTACHMENTS ACROSS BORDERS

For those students who get attachment opportunities in other countries, a written
proof of placement must be presented to the ILO for approval and to arrange for
evaluation. Students must be prepared to sponsor the visits by their Academic
Supervisor. Alternative arrangements for assessing performance of students in
industry is being considered.
University of Zimbabwe
Faculty of Engineering
Industrial Attachment and Professional Experience
6. PROCEDURE FOR GRIEVANCES HANDLING
The students on attachment must comply with the host organization’s code of
conduct. Should the student be found to have breached provisions of the code, the
organization’s disciplinary procedure will be followed. The University of Zimbabwe
will also enforce its disciplinary code after due process had been followed by the
host organization. Students are expected to conduct themselves ethically and to be
guided by the UZ core values, i.e. knowledge, diligence and integrity. The students
are reminded that, when at the host organization, students are representing not only
themselves but the Faculty of Engineering and the University of Zimbabwe. Students
are strongly warned against being involved in illegal activities or acts of misconduct.
Students should be wary of fellow workmates who might involve them in illegal
activities. The Faculty is there to assist all students who find themselves in problem
situations.

7. IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Every student should make sure that they have collected the important documents
from the Faculty Office.
