TITLE PAGE
Investigate the comparative cost of tiling a classroom.
INTRODUCTION
The floor of our classroom is worn out due to the thoroughfare of our
colleagues.

Our principal asked the Building Club to gather information on resurfacing

the classroom with tiles. He stated that the tiling of the classroom is very
important because it helps to give that overall aesthetic. He also mentioned
that the procurement should include at least two (2) quotations from different
suppliers, and we are working with a budget of fifty-five thousand dollars
($55, 000).

Objectives

 Determine the cost of tiling an entire classroom.

 Determine the process of tiling an entire classroom.

 Produce a scale drawing of the floor of the classroom.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

To gather information about this investigation at hand. One classroom had been
selected from the grade eleven block, and we used this classroom to carry out our
investigation. The dimensions of the classroom were obtained using a 30m
measuring tape. The area of the classroom was calculated. Information pertaining
to the different flooring materials was obtained and compared. The general
calculations on this investigation were planned and discussed.
PRESENTATION OF DATA

Width: 39ft

length: 25ft
Scale: 1:150

Scale Calculations
Length = 25ft
= 762cm (about 25ft)

Width = 39ft
= 1188.72cm (about 39ft)

Length of page = 21.59cm (about 8.5 in) × 27.94cm (about 11 in)

The most suitable scale is 1:150

Actual Length = 762 ÷ 150

= 5.08
Actual Width = 1188.72 ÷ 150
= 7.92cm (about 3.12 in)

Our group chose to measure the classroom with the assistance of our teacher. Two
separate measurements were taken for the length of the auditorium as the
measuring tape was too short to measure from tile to tile.
The measurements of the auditorium are:

Length = 25ft
Width = 39ft
Table showing characteristics of Ceramic Flooring

Durability Ceramic tiles are very durable

and are not easily damaged.
They are resistant to dents and
scratches and are an ideal
choice over other materials.
Cost Ceramic tiles are very
affordable flooring material and
usually cost $10.00 per tile, give
or take. The measurement of
each tile is 16 × 16.
Maintenance Ceramic tiles are easy to
maintain as they are very easy
to clean. Any stains of dirt that
may get on them can be easily
removed by mopping, wiping or
sweeping. This is a great space
for the large number of students
that may occupy the auditorium
at times.

Area of floor = Length × Width

= 762cm × 1188.72cm
= 905804.64cm²
Area of tiles = 16 × 2.54cm × 16 × 2.54cm
= 1651.6 cm²
Number of tiles = 905804.64cm² ÷ 1651.6cm²
= 548.44 tiles

 Cost of tiles

1 tile = $20.00
548 tiles = $10, 960.00

ANALYSIS OF DATA
To ensure that the new flooring lasts, suitable materials need to be chosen. Many
factors were considered when choosing the material that needed to be used for this
project such as the price of the material and whether it is the appropriate material
for the assigned room. The most effective way to choose the best material was to
compare different flooring materials and determine which one was best suited for
the room. A scale drawing was done to represent the floor of the auditorium. The
cost of the tiles is $10, 960.00. The auditorium is a special case as its area is roughly
three times the size of any special room in the school. The principal will be informed
that the budget for the auditorium must cater for its huge size.
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
The area of the auditorium was calculated by using the measurements obtained by
the group. A scale drawing was done which represented the floor of the auditorium.
Information about different flooring materials was also obtained and compared by
visiting hardware. The research carried out by the members in our group showed
that ceramic tiles would be the most suitable flooring material as well as the most
cost effective. The number of tiles would be determined, it was 2, 321 tiles. The total
cost needed for the tiles was $23, 210.00; the budget covered everything and this
much waas needed because of the size of the room. This data will be brought to the
principal’s attention.
CONCLUSION
At the end of the SBA, we were able to find suitable material to use for the floor of
the auditorium. A scale drawing was produced to represent the dimensions of the
auditorium (length - 25ft, width – 39ft). When the area of the room was calculated it
became evident that it would take a lot of tiles to complete the floor of the room. The
size of the room caused the budget to exceed $8, 210.00. Every objective except this
one was successfully completed.
