The Purpose of Teaching

The purpose of education is to teach children essential life skills and help them

become better prepared for the future. It is also necessary to teach the material to help prepare

them for the next step in their educational path. Education is one of the biggest things that help

shape these students' minds and help them learn how to think critically. All children deserve an

education. However, not all students are meant to go to school beyond high school. Some

children are meant for college and more schooling, while some are more fit to go into a trade

school, the workforce, or even the armed forces. In my years of education, I had many teachers

who would put real-world scenarios into the classroom and this helped students understand how

to translate classroom experiences into their lives, and I hope someday to bring this into my own

classroom.

The Role of the Teacher

As a teacher, our job is to be a good role model and leader for our students. We

are a guide to these students as these children will be with us for eight hours every day for five

days a week. They will learn a lot from us and how we act in day-to-day situations because we

are primary adults in their lives. To be an effective teacher, you have to be caring,

compassionate, understanding, organized, prepared, open to new ideas, hard-working, among

other things. One of my goals as a teacher is to help the students grow and to be a positive force

in their lives.

The Role of the Student

The students' primary role is to learn and grow. I want to connect with each class

because I want to make sure all students have a safe space and a trusted adult in their life that can

help them when they need it. I want the students to feel comfortable asking questions because

they learn by asking what they do not know. My goal for my students is to have them leave my

classroom with more knowledge and life skills than they had when they came in.

Teaching Method and Expectations

I like to have higher expectations for my students because I believe that children

can do great things in life if they put their mind to it. My teachings will be based on the model

learning of behaviorism, social reconstructionism, and progressivism. From behaviorism, I will

be using some behavior tactics in my lessons; however, my lessons will be curriculum-based. I

also will encourage feedback from the students, like in social reconstructionism. I want my main

content to be based on progressivism and focusing on real-world scenarios and problem-solving

tactics. I want my classroom to be a hands-on classroom for as much of the lesson as possible

because, as we know, children learn by doing and by playing.

Evaluations and Assessments

Not all children learn the same, so why would every child test the same? We

must check to see what knowledge the students are retaining and what needs to be reviewed. We

can do different things like group discussions, or share what we learned with a partner. The

students could also present projects and teach the class something that they knew. There are also

other ways such as paper and pencil tests, exit slips, a review game, and other things. There are

many ways children learn, and we as teachers want to make sure that these students are well

prepared for whatever life is going to throw at them.

Conclusion

Teachers will have a lot to do to make a classroom successful; however, if we do

that work, then we are setting up our students for success! Having this philosophy of education

will help me when I look back to better remember my goals. When things go wrong, I can refer

to this to see if I am doing what I think is best and change things up to make things even better.

By following these different philosophies, I can guide my students through life and better help

them understand the world around them. My job is to teach these students to the best of my

ability and get them started on the right path of education.
