What I need to know
Form is the basic structure of a musical composition. When you listen,
sing, or dance to a piece of music., you are likely to be aware that is made
according to a plan. A song that is made up of two parts and arranged in AB sets
is called binary form. Musical pieces made up of three sections, first section,
middle section and a closing section which usually repeats the first repeats the
first part is called ternary form. Repeat signs in musical pieces indicate repetition
of section.
In this module we will be discovering different topics for Quarter 3 in music. Are you
ready? Let’s go!!! In this module the activities will help you understand and able to attain
the following objectives:
1. Identify simple musical forms of songs from the community (MU6F0- IIIa-b-1),
2. Use different repeat marks that are related to forms (MU6FO-IIIc-3)
3. Describe the instrumental section of the western orchestra.(MU6FO-IIIc-3)

What is It
Let’s now focus on this part of the module to learn more!
When you listen, sing, play, or dance to a pice of music, you are likely to be aware that it is made
according to a plan. Thius plan is called form of music. Form is the basic structure of a musical
composition.
A musical composition made up of two section has a binary form with AB arrangement. The
first section A is followed by a contrasting section B. songs and hymns which have a stanza
followed by a refrain have a binary form.
A musical composition which consists of three sections arrange in a ABA sets has a ternary
form. The third section is a repetition of the first section of the piece. The ternary form may be
expressed as statement (A), contrast (B), and restatement (A).
The third musical form is called round. In round form, the main theme or first section (A) is
repeated after each new section. The arrangement of round is ABACA
The first line of the song “Tinikling” bears the symbol a , which means the piece is sung
beginning with the first line through the last line. The sign directs the singer to go back.

Repeat Marks
1. Dal Segno (D.S.)- which signals a return to the part where it is written
2. Fine – denotes the END of the song.
3. Dal segno Al Fine- means repeat from the D.S. mark and end at “fine.”
4. Da Capo (D.C.)- means repeat the song from the start. It uses the mark.
5. Da Capo Al Fine ║: :║ - indicates repetition of certain parts in musical piece.

A Symphony orchestra is a large intsrumental ensemble that is basically made up of four groups
of instruments: stringed, wood wind, brass and percussion. Each group of instrument has its
distinct tone color or timbre

Symphony Orchestra
A. String Section – produce ounds either by bowing or plucking the strings.
1. Violin- has high pitch and the smallest in size.
2. Viola- a little bigger and it sounds lower because the longer and thicker the
strings.
3. Violin Cello- is tuned an octave than the viola. It is held vertically sitting on
the floor between the knees.
4. Double Bass- the largest instrument of the violin family and the strings are
tuned forth’s.

B. Woodwind Section- are made metal or wood and the sound is produced by
blowing through the opening of the pipe which also has finger-holes.
1. Clarinet- constructed of wood or rubber. Tuned in either Bb or A.
2. Flute and Piccolo- it is in C and about three octaves in range.
3. Oboe- has a double reed to produce a nasal sound. Its range is from B flat
below middle C to two octaves above.
4. Tuba- the lowest pitch instrument of the brass section.

C. Percussion Section- are played by striking, beating, or tapping.

f. Timpani- tuned in C and G notes

2. Non- tuned percussions;

a. Snare Drum

3. Cymbals- round brass plates used one in each hand.
4. Triangle- is a triangular steel instrument which is open in one corner.
5. Tambourine- is a one-sided drum tightly covered with a piece of
animal skin.
6. Castanets- used in Spanish dance, held in fingers and palm of the
hands.

D. Brasswind Sections- are made of brass and the sound is produced by blowing through

the mouth piece


1. Trumpet- has the highest pitch among brass wind section. It uses treble
staff and tuned in B flat.
2. Trombone- has a low pitch than a trumpet. Made up of brass and uses
bass staff
3. French horn- is in F and uses also a bass staff.
4. Tuba- lowest pitched instrument among the brass wind family.

One night I had a dream. I dreamed I think that I shall never see
that I was walking along the beach A poem lovely as a tree.
