BRIEF POLITICAL HISTORY OF MANJUYOD

When Magellan came to the Philippines, we know he first landed at Samar, then led his
ships to Cebu.
Thereafter, Cebu became progressive and well-populated so that its people had to find
other lands to which to conveniently resettle and reside. So Negros Island, West of Cebu, was
opportune available especially for landless migrants.
Gradually then, Cebuanos settled at the east coast of Negros now the Province of
Negros Oriental, and at about the center of which is called Manjuyod.
Manjuyod, or incredibly , “Mang Guyod” as formerly called, was the name of the man
who inhabited early in the place. With his gigantic physique he possessed physical strengths
and moral fiber legendarily superior to those around him: and this, with his notably humble,
though courageous, just and friendly traits, made him quite attractive, famous. True to his
name, he dragged, attracted irresistibly, “Man Guyod,” people far and wide to stay and reside in
this place. This led to identify the place with his name.
Manjuyod’s becoming a town would stretch recall back to the 1850. Its leader at that
time was an Augustinian priest, Father Antonio Moreno from Tanjay, who constructed roads,
bridges and forts. He was succeeded by Rev. Father Eusebio Valderama, who was late
succeeded by a lawman leader, Capitan Esteban Balasabas, the first cabez.
So, the chronology goes for the place’s leadership:
