ACTIVITY 13.1: Word Problem


Directions: Solve using the Hardy-Weinberg equation.
Gaucher disease (GD) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of the β-
glucocerebrosidase enzyme due to disease causing mutations in the GBA1 (glucosidase
beta acid) gene.This leads to the abnormal accumulation of the lipid glucocerebroside in
lysosomal macrophages. GD is a rare genetically inherited trait that is expressed in the
phenotype of homozygous recessive individuals (aa). The average human frequency of the
disease in the Philippines is only about 1 in 20,000.

I employed the Hardy-Weinberg Equation to determine the homozygous


dominant, heterozygous, and homozygous recessive. I used the stated
ratio to obtain the q2, and then square-rooted the q2 to determine the
frequency of the recessive allele. I then calculate the dominant allele
frequency by subtracting the recessive allele frequency from 1. Then, I
multiply the recessive allele frequency and the dominant allele frequency
by two to obtain the heterozygous.
