Milgem: It's March 31st, 2023. Goodmorning, Friday; this is Milgem Payao reporting live
at MAA News. As we celebrate Science Month and Earth Month this coming April, we will
talk about climate change, its effects, and how we will reduce its effects.
Audrey: We've been burning more and more fossil fuels, like oil and coal, which release
CO2, to power our homes, factories, airplanes, and cars. The global population has
tripled in the past 70 years. And we’re consuming more products from animals that
release another pollutant called methane. So all those gasses are in the air, and when
sunlight gets into the earth’s atmosphere, some of the heat gets trapped and the planet
gets warmer. That’s why they call it the "Greenhouse Effect."
Lorraine: Besides, these climate changes affect life on Earth in various ways. What are
the possible effects of climate change when it comes to a person's health?
Bacurin: Due to rising temperatures, more extreme weather, increased CO2 levels, and
rising sea levels because of climate change, it affects our health, and the possible effects
are respiratory and heart diseases, pest-related diseases like Lyme disease and West
Nile Virus, zoonoses, water- and food-related illnesses, heat-related illnesses, injuries,
and deaths.
Lorraine: What are the possible effects of climate change on plants, glaciers, and
precipitation?
Leigh: Climate change alters the life cycle of plants, and because of rising temperatures,
it leads to more frequent droughts, wildfires, and invasive pest outbreaks, leading to the
loss of plant species. The melting of glaciers may contribute to the rising of sea levels,
which in turn increases coastal erosion and elevates storm surge. Climate change also
alters precipitation, impacting people and ecosystems by altering the availability of water
throughout the year.
Leigh: Practice reducing, reusing, and recycling. And adopting a plant-based diet by
increasing your vegetable consumption and reducing your meat consumption can
reduce carbon emissions.
Rhiane: Using renewable energy by installing solar panels may help our environment,
and instead of avoiding illegal logging, we should plant more trees. Remember, a single
tree can absorb up to a ton of carbon dioxide.
Milgem - Lastly Educate people. All efforts made to lessen the effects of climate change
will be useless if people do not have knowledge about how to take care of our
environment. As students, the best way is to educate them about the dangers of climate
change and how to act against it.
Athena: Adapting to climate change means taking action to prepare for and adjust to
both the current effects of climate change and the changes that have already begun.
Adaptation means reducing our vulnerability to rising sea levels, extreme weather, and
food shortages. We need to learn how to live with and adapt to these changes; what are
the most suitable adaptation options we have? The options that we have are: flood
preparedness measures, improvement of drainage systems, wetland restoration, and
coastal management.
Audrey: Remember that adaptation is a learning process that we all need to continuously
improve. We must start acting today, together, involve decision-makers, increase
understanding of climate change, create awareness about the need for society to adapt.
These are important 4 steps preparing for possible things to come is much better than
barring the impact of climate change without any protection. Thank you so much for
watching. This is Audrey Salazar reporting from the MAA news update.
