Chapter 1
1.1 Soil Mechanics – is the branch of
science that deals with the study of the
physical properties of soil and the behavior
of soil masses subjected to various types
of forces.
Soil mechanics is the study of the
engineering behavior of soil when it is
used either as a construction material or
as a foundation material.
1.2 Geotechnical Engineering is the subdiscipline
of civil engineering that involves natural
materials found close to the surface of the
earth. It includes the application of the
principles of soil mechanics and rock
mechanics to the design of foundations,
retaining structures, and earth structures.

1.3 Foundation engineering applies the
knowledge of geology, soil mechanics, rock
mechanics, and structural engineering to the
design and construction of foundations for
buildings and other structures.
Example:
chemical weathering of feldstar can
produce clay minerals.
