DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

* Guided Notes & Worksheet *

Guided Notes:

Our body needs energy to function, energy is the ability of a physical system to do
work. For your body to grow, move, breath, pump blood and stay warm, all require it to
use energy.

Your whole digestive system from start to finish is a tube running through your body
called the alimentary canal or GI tract (gastrointestinal tract), it starts from the mouth
all the way to the anus.

the primary & other organs of the digestive system is:

- pharynx
- esophagus
- stomach
- small intestine
- large intestine
- salivary glands
- pancreas
- liver
- gallbladder

Enzymes are also included throughout the tract.

People are probably more aware of their digestive system than any other system , not
least because of its frequent messages , hunger , thirst , appetite , gas and the
frequency of bowel movements are all issues affecting daily life.

The steps are the digestive system ingestion, propulsion, mechanical breakdown,
chemical breakdown, absorption, then defecation.
Ingestion - getting the food inside your body
Propulsion - general swallowing down the GI tract
Mechanical breakdown- the act of chewing and churning in the stomach.
Reducing the foods into smaller pieces to be easier to digest and remove nutrients.
Chemical breakdown- historically referred to as digestion . Breaking down the
food with stomach acids
Absorption- The simple molecules that result from chemical digestion pass
through cell membranes of the lining in the small intestine into the blood or lymph
capillaries.
Defecation - the expulsion of the food that was not absorbed. This waste matter,
or feces, exits the body via the anus.

Generally the Digestive system is food being converted into very small pieces such as,
sugars, amino acids and fatty acids. It goes through the absorption process which it
being absorbed into the bloodstream coming from the small intestine, and the
extracted nutrients is carried to each cell in the body.

- Short Answer Question:

Summarize how the digestive system works, start to finish. Be sure to use key
points from the guided notes. Summary must be at least 5 sentences long.

_The digestive system basically converts the food that we eat into their simplest form ,
like glucose (sugars) , amino acids that make up protein or any fatty acids that make up
fats. The gl tract is the pathway food takes from your mouth throughout the esophagus
, stomach , small and large intestine and whatever isnt absorbed keeps moving through
your gl tract until you get rid of it by using the bathroom.
