Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Mental Health must be filled with attention for the sake of the health of

each individual. According to the World Health Organization, however, mental

health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her

potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and

fruitfully, and can make a contribution to her or his community. Online classes

affect the mental health of students, parents, and even teachers. For individuals

who have existing mental health problems, it may worsen. Imagine how it is like

for a kid to spend hours every day in front of Zoom without social interaction and

playtime with their friends. Parents are now acting like teachers and are more

involved in their children’s schoolwork. Teachers and professors have increased

workloads and are pressured to deliver quality learning without face-to-face

classes. Mental Health has many negative effects not only on a student’s

learning but also on his or her daily life and should pay attention to one's body or

appearance because we can experience anxiety, behavior problems, and

depression experienced especially by students and in this current pandemic.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Halupa (2016) in her article which is focused on the impacts

of online learning, Technology is now prevalent in many countries around the

world. Technology has worsened inequalities and widened the gap between the

"haves" and "have not’s" among youth. This may have a negative impact on

youth who are expected by their teachers and peers to have these electronic

tools as well as Internet connection at home. This can have a negative impact on

a student's self-esteem and perceived value, as well as cause undue stress.

According to KY Counseling Center (2021), As a result of the COVID-19

pandemic, schools and institutions across the United States and around the

world have switched to online classes. During a pandemic, everyone's health and

safety are of the utmost importance, and online schooling is the only viable

alternative. According to counselors Jessica Oyoque and Courtney Brown (2020)

at MSU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services, or CAPS, feelings of isolation due

to the lack of face-to-face interaction are just one of the many pitfalls of digital

learning, “With online classes, students may experience challenges as it relates

to increased screen time,” Oyoque and Brown wrote in an email. According to

Adonis (2021), some students suffers panic attacks whenever they receives text

messages on their mobile phone from teachers of what could well be simple

reminders to parents about their children’s missed deadlines.
