A recent incident in which the American Club was allegedly involved was brought to the
University’s attention by several members of the Long Island University community. Specifically,
these reports allege social media posts that may violate the LIU Student Code of Conduct and
LIU Internet and Social Media Policy. While the University does not routinely or deliberately
review internet or social media sites, we hold an obligation to investigate alleged policy
violations, illegal conduct, or posting of offensive and/ or inappropriate material by University
students on such sites.
SUMMARY OF INCIDENT
It has come to our attention that at least four Instagram stories connected to International
Women’s Day were shared from the liu_americanclub account on or around March 8, 2023.
Specifically, two Instagram stories have been identified as potential violations of the LIU Student
Code of Conduct and LIU Internet and Social Media Policy.
The above summary was formulated based upon the initial incident information provided by eye-
witness statements who witnessed the incident. It is imperative for you to understand that the
summary does not indicate a presumption of responsibility for any or all of the allegations. As
indicated in the Student Rights in the Conduct System, all students are “considered innocent of
the charges until proven responsible by a preponderance (51%) of evidence.” In instances
where the safety and welfare of a student has been determined as a concern, a representative
from the Office of the Dean of Students may contact a parent or legal guardian, as per FERPA
provisions.
The American Club is alleged to have violated the following principles of the LIU Student Code
of Conduct. Relevant portions of these policies are included below:
Students shall not use the internet or social networks for transmission of
illegal, threatening, libelous, inappropriate and/or offensive materials of any
nature including, but not limited to depictions involving sexual, racial, religious
or ethnic stereotypes.
The University reserves the right to notify the police or local authority if
student use of internet or social media sites violates federal, state, or local
law. Students may also be held responsible for alleged off-campus violations
as depicted on social networking sites or other forums if such conduct is
deemed to adversely affect the campus community, in accordance with the
Student Code of Conduct Policy.
The University will work in the days ahead to investigate any and all accusations against the
American Club. We expect that all organization officers and members will cooperate with the
University throughout the course of this investigation.
Sincerely,
