DISASTER

 A sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe, that causes great damage or loss of life.
 A disaster is defined as a “sudden or great misfortune” or simply “any unfortunate event.” More
precisely, a disaster is “an event whose timing is unexpected and whose consequences are seriously
destructive.”
 These definitions identify an event that includes three elements:
 Suddenness
 Unexpectedness
 Significant destruction and/or adverse consequences

WHAT IS EDN?
 Disaster nursing refers to a situation in which a health professional, usually a registered nurse or nurse
practitioner, responds to a crisis situation by volunteering with an aid organization or volunteer
responder organization.

THE PHILIPPINE DISASTER AND RISK PROFILE

CONCEPT OF DISASTER
 Disasters are serious disruptions to the functioning of a community that exceed its capacity to cope
using its own resources.
 Disasters can be caused by natural, man-made and technological hazards, as well as various factors
that influence the exposure and vulnerability of a community.

NATURAL VS TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTER

 NATURAL DISASTER
- is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; beyond human control
- Examples include firestorms, dust storms, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and other geologic processes.

 TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTER
- is an event caused by a malfunction of a technological structure and/or some human error in
controlling or handling the technology; there is involvement of human interventions
- Technological disasters can be considered a man-made disaster meaning there is an “identifiable
cause” characteristic
- Example includes airplane crash

INTERNAL VS EXTERNAL DISASTER

 INTERNAL DISASTER
- are emergency situations in which only patients, visitors, and staff within the hospital are injured.
- Internal disasters involve taking care of injured victims and evacuation, if part of the facility is
damaged or non-functional

 EXTERNAL DISASTER
- occur at locations separate from the hospital, such as transportation incidents or industrial
accidents

Disasters can be both internal and external disasters concomitantly, such as natural disasters that
cause mass casualties as well as damage hospital structure.

TYPES OF NATURAL DISASTER

 Geophysical
 Meteorological
 Hydrological
 Climatological
 Sociological

1. GEOPHYSICAL DISASTER
- Originate from internal earth processes
- Examples are earthquakes, volcanic activity and emissions, and related geophysical processes
such as mass movements, landslides, rockslides, surface collapses and debris or mud flows

2. METEOROLOGICAL DISASTER
- Are caused by extreme weathers such as rain, drought, snow, extreme heat or cold, ice, or wind.
- Examples of weather disasters embrace blizzard, cyclones, droughts, hailstorms, heat waves,
hurricanes, floods (caused by rain) and tornadoes

3. HYDROLOGICAL DISASTER
- Defined as extreme events associated with water occurrence, movement, and distribution,
hydrological hazards include droughts and flooding and related events (e.g., landslides and river
scour and deposition)

4. CLIMATOLOGICAL DISASTER
- Events that are brought about by drastic fluctuations of climate states and variabilities.
- This includes natural phenomena like disasters and their weaker counterparts.
- Climate, by definition, is the weather conditions that are typical to an area or region

5. SOCIOLOGICAL DISASTER
- Type of man-made disaster, are wanton acts of senseless violence perpetrated by mentally
unbalanced people in today’s society

MAN-MADE DISASTERS – defined as a type of disaster caused by human

 Terrorism
 Technological
 Transitional Human
 Shelters

1. TERRORISM
- The unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political
aims

2. TECHNOLOGICAL
- is an event caused by a malfunction of a technological structure and/or some human error in
controlling or handling the technology
- Technological disasters can be considered a man-made disaster meaning there is an “identifiable
cause” characteristic

3. TRANSITIONAL HUMAN SHELTER

- is a structure in which usually a family can live, with dignity, for as long as their permanent
accommodation takes to build or restore
