Task Sheet for completion after initial reading of text

1. Write a plot summary for the novel. Highlight the main events and ideas only. Write exactly
89 words.

Mikage’s grandma dies so Yuichi (her grandma’s ex part-time florist) and Eriko (Yuichi’s
biological father turned mother) offers her a place while she grieves. After Mikage finds a
culinary job and has a stable life, she moves back out into her grandmother’s house. Eriko
gets murdered by a psychotic stalker and Yuichi moves back in with Eriko to help him grieve
for a short term when she found out. To cope, Yuichi stays in an inn and avoids Mikage
however Mikage attempts to visit him and bring him Tonkatsu.

2. Write a series of paragraphs about the following characters or groups of characters. Your
paragraphs should be about 10 lines each:
 Mikage
 Yuichi
 Eriko
 Sotaro – ex bf
 Chika – bar hostess, turned new manager
 Okuno – ex gf

Mikage:
Mikage’s parents died when she was young and her Grandmother passed away when she
was in her early adult age. Mikage met Yuichi as he used to be a part-time florist for her
Grandmother’s flower shop. Eriko and Yuichi invite Mikage to live with them while she
grieves and stabilises her life. She forms a close friendship and have a strong bond with
Yuichi from dealing with grief. Had a part-time culinary baking job whilst she lived with
Yuichi before graduating and being a full-time culinary assistant. Gets pushed away from
Yuichi when he leaves for an inn to grieve about his mother’s death. Mikage knows that
Yuichi hasn’t eaten whilst hes grieving, so she orders tonkatsu to personally travel 40
minutes to deliver it to him in his inn.

4. Describe the setting(s) in a paragraph or two.

5. Explain how the novel was a comment on Japanese society in the 1980s (the introduction
will help you with this).
6. What method of narration is used in the novel and how did the narrative point of view affect
your reading of the text?

7. What recurring images or symbols did you observe in your reading? For each image or
symbol you identify explain in a sentence what you think it might represent.

8. Describe one scene from the novel that you found interesting, disturbing or thought
provoking and explain why it made you feel this way. Write about 5 lines.

9. Write down at least 3 questions you would like to ask about the book.
