INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Early in the 20th century, children's purchase of toys, sweets, and

movie tickets sparked concerns about their spending patterns. Due to this,

the practice of giving children allowances evolved. During the Progressive

Era (1890s–1920s), proponents of giving children an allowance

recommended doing so on a regular basis to assist them learn to respect

money. The child gave permission for allowances, which were intended to

encourage charity and fiscal responsibility. The progressive era saw a

much louder chorus of publications for women and parents promoting

improved money management strategies (Child, L.M., 1831). Despite the

benefits that students enjoy from receiving allowance, there are problems

and negativities. They frequently believe that they own the money and are

free to spend it whatever they like. Students often use their allowances for

recreational activities including renting a computer for games and

pleasure, shopping at the mall, and buying things for their friends. The
advocates want to investigate how daily allowances for pupils affect their

academic success.

According to Felipe (2007) he stated that “A lot of the numbers of students

seem to want what is the “in” trend , what people are doing or using “right

now”. Most teens will usually have one or two sources of income, either

allowance from their parents or a job. The answer to this question isn’t

found by looking at the income of the family or social status, it’s more a

way of living and rearing that the parents have given their children”.

The researcher seeks to find out the effect of daily allowance in the

academic performance of the Grade 12 students in Colegio De Maharlika

of North Cotabato, Inc.

Statement of the problem

This study will be undertaken to determine the daily allowance of grade 12

student in Colegio de Maharlika and how does it affect their academic

performance.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the minimum amount of allowance of a Grade-12 student in Colegio

de Maharlika?

2.

3. What is the maximum amount of allowance of a Grade-12 student in Colegio

de Maharlika?

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the student’s allowance to

their academic performance?

Significance of the study

The study deals with the everyday allowance of Grade-12 students. It seeks

answers as to how and where the respondents spend their money every day.

Considering that money is an essential commodity that helps a person to run his

or her life, this study is significant for it will benefit the students, their

parents/guardian and also the teachers.

The students. This study may help students to appraise their practice of

spending money. This will inform them where students like them generally spend

their money with. Upon this information, this study can enlighten them on how to

use their allowance wisely.

The Parents/Guardians. This study may help the parents/guardians by

providing insights and information about the allowance they give to their children

and how and where they generally use it. This study can inform them as to how
much allowance is accurate for their children to use it for their needs in their

chosen course.

The Teachers. This study may help also the teachers to teach their

students on how to manage their allowance correctly. Specifically, Mathematics

teachers are most involved on this study because they teach more on solving

problems. On the other hand, other teachers can also help students to provide

better understanding about this topic.

Theoretical Framework

This theory is anchored based on System's Theory Input-Output Model

(1956) by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy which states that finance is a broad term that

describes two related activities: the study how money is managed and the actual

process of acquiring needed funds. It relates the interaction of individual

components of the structure to the functioning of the structure as a whole.

The theory, according to Koontz and Weihrich, (1988) postulates that an

organized enterprise does not exist in a vacuum; it is dependent on its

environment in which it is established. They continue by saying that the

organization takes in inputs from the environment and converts those inputs into

outputs. When students enter the university system, the administration of the
university transforms them through the process of teaching and learning, and the

students' output is seen through their academic performance. As adapted in this

study, the students

(Inputs) are admitted into the university, with different admission points, from

different social economic backgrounds, and are from various school

backgrounds.

The input-output model makes the assumption that students with high

admissions scores, strong social economic backgrounds, and strong educational

backgrounds will perform well if the university's facilities, lecturers, and

management are good. However, this assumption may not always be true, and

this is the theory's flaw. The interrelationships between system components must

be understood by all participants, claim Oso and Onen (2005). This theory calls

for a shared vision, which is difficult to attain, so that everyone at the institution

understands what they are aiming to accomplish from all parties involved.
