    Calculating ideal body weight Example


    (ibw) in overweight children An 11-year-old asthmatic boy presents with
    1. If you suspect a child is overweight, exacerbation. His true body weight is 70kg.
    calculate their body mass index (BMI) He is 1.5m tall. You think he looks overweight
    using the formula below: for age. Prescribe Aminophylline.

    dosing guidance in the BNF for children = 5mg x IBW = 5 x 38.25kg = 191mg
    should be followed.
    Step 6:
    6. Dosing guidance for all other drugs Prescribe aminophylline
    including antibiotics should follow the maintenance dose = 1mg/kg/hr =
    BNF for children and if dose calculated 38mg/hr (500mg Aminophylline
    from weight use patient’s actual weight. in 500mls sodium chloride 0.9%)
