Lesson Idea
X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
Lesson idea implementation: Students will be discussing and reviewing the types
of a text through a PowerPoint presentation that leads them to a YouTube video explaining the

different types of text structures. Then students will join a Padlet and answering 5 short
questions asking about what they already know about the different types of text. This will show
me what they students are understanding and might need a little more help with. After discussion
class will play a Jeopardy game created by the teacher as groups. This will be a way for the
students to answer questions and be a formative assessment for me as the teacher. After
Jeopardy is played students will (as groups) answer the HOTQ “Why is it important to know the
types of text structures?” and We will then go back to the Padlet and reply to our own post if we
feel as if their needs to be corrections. After this groups will begin discussion their favorite
type of structure to write in and plan to make a short narrative using that structure.
Managing engagement This lesson will shift students’ behavior from passive to active
through the actives throughout the lesson. Students will be mostly active during this lesson
by using the Padlet, watching the video, and especially while play jeopardy. Students will
have about 5-10 minutes to answer the Padlet questions the first time and to review and
check their first answers they will have about 10-15. During our jeopardy game students will
be allowed 7 seconds to choose their topic and 10 seconds to answer the question. This
will ensure all students are answering in a timely manner and not having the opportunity to
lookup answering while planning. When we are done with jeopardy students will begiven 30-
45 mins to decide which text structure, they like the most, come up with a topic and write a
short narrative. During this time, I will be walking around and using the “just in time”
help method.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson shows many ways to support
learning by using Padlet at first. This is a very useful took because of the multiple
different ways a student can respond to the questions. Then by using a YouTube
video and then interacting with all students using Jeopardy. I will explain to
students the goal in the end is to write their own narrative using their favorite text
structure so they can plan to be active and engaged to be able to decide in the
end of the lesson.
Reflecting on enhanced learning:
These tools will build understanding because students must be proactive through the whole
lesson to understand what we are doing. There are also many ways for them to stay active. While
students are thinking on their own at the begging on the lesson but also working with peers to
decide which text structure fits the questions best and which is the best structure to use when
writing.
