Shutter Island

Teddy Daniels arrives at a mental facility in the Boston Harbor Islands in 1954. Teddy
feels he's been sent to look into a patient's disappearance. Deputy McPherson, the
security chief, demands that the men hand over their rifles. Teddy discovers "The Law
of 4" and "Who is 67?" written on two mysterious notes in Rachel's cage. Teddy has a
dream in which Dolores, his late wife, assures him that Rachel is "still here." Teddy
conducts interviews with the other patients in Rachel's group therapy sessions,
suspecting that she received assistance in escaping. Teddy tells Chuck when stranded
in a shelter during a storm that the arsonist who killed his wife, Andrew Laeddis, should
be at Ashecliffe but is gone. Teddy also reveals that he spoke with George Noyce, a
former Ashecliffe patient, who informed him that Ashecliffe is performing illegal
experiments on political dissidents. Teddy discovers that he is one of the most
dangerous patients in Ashecliffe, a New York City psychiatric facility. Rachel Solando,
three dead children, a disfigured guy he believes is Andrew Laeddis, and Dolores are
among his dreams. Teddy assaults and sedates George Naehring after implying that he
is a "monster" with a "wound." Teddy, against the desires of Dolores' ghost, who he
symbolically leaves behind, resolves to go to the lighthouse instead to save Chuck.
"TEDDY DANIELS" and "TEDRYS," as well as "ANDREW LAEDDIS" and "RACH," are
anagrams, according to Cawley. Teddy has a misconception that he is a U.S. soldier,
according to psychiatrist Dr. Cawley. To avoid confronting horrific events in his own
history, a Marshal is investigating a disappearance. Teddy suddenly recalls his previous
existence as Andrew Laeddis, in which he killed his wife Dolores after realizing she had
drowned his three children in a lake one day after returning home from work. He asks
Chuck whether it is preferable to live as a monster or die as a good man, then joins the
others in walking towards the lighthouse.
