ACTIVITY@Validity OF LOGIC

INSTRUCTIONS : THE PROBLEM BELOW IS ABOUT APPLICATION OF TRUTH TABLE.

ANSWER THE PROBLEM USING THE TABLE (p, q, r, s), WHETHER SUCH ARGUMENT IS
VALID OR INVALID. WRITE YOUR FINAL ANSWERS CLEARLY AND MUST BE READABLE.

1. Use a truth table to test the validity of the argument.

Let:

Socrates has a new toga or he didn't waste 30 drachmas.

Plato has a pound of feta cheese or a quart of olive oil.
Socrates wasted 30 drachmas and Plato doesn't have a pound of feta cheese.
Therefore, Socrates has a new toga and Plato has a quart of olive oil.

Is it VALID or INVALID? Show your Table and highlight your JUSTIFICATION.

A. Valid
B. Invalid

SOLUTION:

P = Socrates has a new toga.

Q = Socrates wasted 30 drachmas.
R = Plato has a pound of feta cheese.
S = Plato has a quart of olive oil.

Symbolic Form:
pvq
rvs
q ^ ~r
Therefore, p^s

^ (q ^ ~r) ~r)} →
p^s

ANSWER:
A. Valid. Since the conclusion is tautology, meaning, no row in which the conclusion is
false while both premises are true; the argument is therefore valid.
