PREWRITING CONSIDERATION
Once we have established our purpose and main message,
we can begin to generate the ideas that will form the content of our
document. This is the prewriting stage. The following techniques
explore methods that can use to help us identify our ideas quickly and
clarify our thoughts :
Random List : List everything that comes to mind and then sort
it into groups. Look for connections: sequential, topical, etc.
Journalistic approach : Useful if your task is to convey
information. Ask and answer six questions:
Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
Question and answer chain : Look at the subject from our
reader’s perspective. Put ourself in our reader’s position by
asking:
What are my reader’s main questions likely to be?
What do they need to know?
Examine our answers to these questions. What additional questions
emerge? Follow the question answer chain until you have exhausted
all questions.
Free writing : Set ourself a limited time for free writing: say five
minutes for a task like a letter. Just write without worrying about
grammar, spelling, sentences, structure or anything else. If we
get stuck, repeat the last words we have written until new
thoughts start to come.
Whichever brainstorming approach we take, the end
result will be similar. Once we have this, the next steps are to
organize the ideas and create first draft of the research report.
