I. Objectives

A. Content Standards The learner recognizes that communicative competence requires


understanding of speech context, speech style, speech act and
communicative strategy.

B. Performance Standards The learner demonstrates effective use of communicative strategy in a


variety of speech situations.

Competencies/Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Distinguish the different types of speech acts in a
communicative scenario.
2. Realize the importance of the knowledge on the types of speech
acts on having successful and meaningful communication.
3. Demonstrate knowledge on the types of speech acts by
distinguishing the type of illocutionary act applied in sentences
and their possible perlocutionary act as response.

a. ACTIVITY BRAINSTORMING:
1. The teacher shows the class the picture.
2. The teacher asks the students:
a. What do you think are the reasons why people
misunderstand each other in a communicative scenario?
b. Upon the reasons you have cited, what should be done in
order to avoid misunderstanding in a communicative
scenario?

LESSON : TYPES OF SPEECH ACTS

SPEECH ACT- pertains to how you act at a given situation. It involves


the utterance and the responses of the speaker and the listener.

TYPES OF SPEECH ACT

1. LOCUTION (UTTERANCE)
- The performance of the utterance and speech act.
- WHAT WAS SAID
- the LITERAL SENTENCE

2. ILLOCUTIONARY ACT (INTENTION)


- is WHAT WAS MEANT
- It is the intended action of the utterance.

TYPES OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACT

a) Assertives – speech acts that commit the speaker to do


something.
Example: Suggest, boast, swear, conclude
b) Directives – speech acts that are to cause the hearer to take a
particular action.
Examples: Requests, commands, advice, order
c) Commissives – speech acts that commit a speaker to some
future action.
Examples: Promises, oath, plan, vow
d) Expressives - speech acts that express the speaker’s attitudes
and emotions towards the proposition.
Examples: Congratulations, excuses, apology and thanks.
e) Declarations – speech acts that change the reality in accord
with the proposition of the declaration.
Examples: Baptisms, pronouncing someone guilty or
pronouncing someone husband and wife.

3. PERLOCUTIONARY ACT (RESPONSE)


- Speech acts viewed at the level of psychological
consequences such as persuading, convincing, scaring,
enlightening, inspiring etc.
- The ACTUAL effect of the utterance to the hearer or the
reader.

2. What is/are the importance of knowing the different types of
illocutionary speech acts?
3. How can your knowledge about speech acts avoid further
misunderstanding in a communicative scenario?

d. APPLICATION/
ASSESSMENT Directions: Demonstrate knowledge on the types of speech acts by
distinguishing the type of illocutionary act applied in sentences and their
corresponding or possible perlocutionary act as a response.
