Magnitude of
Reproductive Health
Problem in Workplace
1 in 3 women experience a severe
reproductive health condition, but only
50% actively seek help, regardless
of symptom severity.

Putting that into perspective, if you have a

workforce of 5,000 women, this means
over 800 women in your workforce are
not getting access to the care they need

How Workers Are Exposed
to Job Hazards
If you work with chemicals, they can enter your body
in three ways:
Breathing the chemical in
Coming in contact with the skin, especially if your skin
is chapped, irritated, or if you have an open wound
Hand-to-mouth

13
How Workers Are Exposed
to Job Hazards
Chemical exposures can cause health problems. Whether
or not they cause health problems depends on:
What the chemical is
How the chemical enters the body
How long or how often a person is exposed to the
chemical
How each person reacts to the chemical

Tugas Pengelola Tempat Kerja
(what employers should know?)

Health and safety is good for your bottom line

Healthy employees are more productive than sick workers.
Showing your employees that you care about their health and
safety and the health of their families can improve morale and
employee retention.
Improving safety and health at your workplace can also save
your company money. Research shows that successful safety
and health systems reduce the costs of injury and illness, and
have a high return on investment.

15
Reproductive hazards matter all the
time, for both men and women
(what employers should know?)
Men’s sexual function, sperm, or semen can be affected by some
workplace hazards.
Women’s fertility and menstrual function can be affected by
some workplace hazards.
Both men and women can carry chemicals home on the skin,
hair, clothes, and shoes.
When a pregnant or breastfeeding worker is exposed to hazards,
her baby might be exposed too.
Many chemicals in the workplace have not been tested to see if
they can cause reproductive problems.
Laws for workplace safety and health do not always protect
men’s and women’s reproductive health and the health of their
families. 16
Pregnant and breastfeeding workers
(what employers should know?)
Pregnant women absorb some chemicals faster than non-
pregnant women, such as some metals.
As her body changes, a pregnant worker may find that personal
protective equipment (like lab coats or some types of respirators)
no longer fits correctly.
Changes in a pregnant worker’s immune system, lung capacity,
and even ligaments can alter her risk for injury or illness due to
some workplace hazards.
Some chemical exposures might be riskier for an unborn baby
than its mother.
If an employee is breastfeeding, think about what exposures can
get into her breast milk.

What Healthcare Professionals
Should Know
Reproductive hazards matter all the time, for both men and women
Some workplace hazards can affect fertility and sexual function
for both men and women.
Some chemicals can concentrate in semen, providing a route of
exposure for sexual partners.
When a pregnant or breastfeeding worker is exposed to hazards,
her baby might be exposed too.
Any worker (male or female) can carry harmful chemicals home
on their skin, hair, clothes, and shoes. These can affect the
people in their household, especially children.
Some reproductive hazards can disrupt sex hormone production
and lead to reduced general health, especially in women.

Introduce a Reproductive Health policy, better facilitate
conversations between line managers and employees.

Create inclusive physical workspaces, so if an employee

needs to work in the office, medication can be stored
securely and they can have access to appropriate private
spaces to administer it, or attend to their emotional health.

Ensure existing policies and support are well promoted, so

they can be utilised by the employee, whether they
themselves are receiving the treatment or supporting their
partner.

Train line managers so they are empowered to know how

to respond when someone shares information about their
reproductive health. Embed the importance of treating
each person as an individual, whose personal
circumstances and treatment needs will be unique.
