The document provides instructions for testing negative flow control on pumps. It includes circuit diagrams, tool setup details, test procedures and specifications.

Plug, pressure gauges, portable hydraulic tester (flow meter), tee fittings and hoses are needed to install in the circuit and monitor pressures and flow.

Disconnect the delivery line from the upper pump and install a plug. Install pressure gauges and connect the portable hydraulic tester between the pump and swing motor. Increase oil temperature and adjust the tester valve and pilot relief valve to measure flow at 2650 kPa. Record the results in the table.

Preparation

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and
repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with
suitable containers before opening any compartment or
disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and

Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect
and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and

mandates.

Test
Note: Perform the test for the upper pump and the test for the lower pump one at a time.

To prevent personal injury or equipment damage from failure of

the hydraulic test equipment or associated circuit components
because of blocked pump flow, make sure that the test
equipment valves are fully open before starting the engine.

To prevent personal injury and/or equipment damage from failed

lines or components while the hydraulic test equipment is
returned to the open flow position, slowly open the hydraulic
test equipment valve while monitoring the pump flow.

If pump flow does not increase as the valve is opened, shut the
engine off and determine what is preventing the pump from
upstroking.

1. Start the engine.

2. Place the machine controls at the following settings: Power Mode, engine speed dial "10" and AEC
switch OFF.
Reference: Make reference to Testing And Adjusting, "Operational Checks" for engine rpm
settings.

3. Increase the hydraulic oil temperature to 55° ± 5°C (131° ± 9°F).

4. Turn valve (26) on portable hydraulic tester (12) clockwise until the pump delivery pressure is
6850 kPa (1000 psi).

5. Adjust pilot relief valve (25) on pilot oil manifold (11) until pressure gauge (19) that is connected to
tee (14) indicates 2650 kPa (385 psi).

6. Record the negative flow at 2650 kPa (385 psi) in Table 1.
