Statistical Treatment

To determine the socio-demographic profile of the public of Lila, Bohol, the

simple percentage will be computed using the following

f
%= x 100
N

Where,

% = percent

F = frequency

N = total number of respondents

To determine the perception of the public of Lila, Bohol, the weighted mean will

be used:

∑fx
W
n

Where,

W = weighted mean

F = frequency

x = weight of each scale

n = number of respondents
To interpret the weighted mean, the following scale will be used:

Table 1. Likert Scale

Scale Interval Adjectival Interpretation

Whale Shark Ecotourism is
4 3.25 – 4.0 Strongly Agree
Highly Beneficial
Whale Shark Ecotourism is
3 2.50 – 3.23 Agree
Beneficial
Whale Shark Ecotourism is
2 1.75 – 2.49 Disagree
Not Beneficial
Whale Shark Ecotourism is
1 1.0 – 1.74 Strongly Disagree
Highly Not Beneficial

To determine the dispersion in the relation of the perception of the public of Lila,

Bohol, the Standard deviation will be used:

2
Σ(x i−μ)
σ=
N

Where,

σ = population standard deviation

N = the size of the population

x 1= each value from the population

μ = the population of the mean

To determine the relationship between the level of perception and socio-

demographic profile of the public in Lila, Bohol on whale shark tourism, the Pearson

Product Moment Coefficient will be computed using the formula

n ∑ xy−∑ x ∑ y
r=
√ [ n ∑ x −( ∑ x ) ] [n ∑ y −( ∑ y ) ]
2 2 2 2

Where,
∑ xy = sum of the products of the respondents’ socio-demographic

profile and perceptions

∑ x = sum of the means of the respondents’ socio-demographic

profile

∑ y = sum of the means of the respondents’ perceptions

N = number of respondents

To interpret the correlation value, the following classification may be applied.

0.00 to ± 0.20 denotes negligible correlation

± 0.21 to ± 0.40 denotes low or slight relationship

± 0.41 to ± 0.70 denotes marked or moderate correlation

± 0.71 to ± 0.90 denotes high relationship

± 0.91 to ± 0.99 denotes very high relationship

± 1.00 denotes perfect relationship

To test the significant hypotheses between the socio-demographic profile and

perception on whale shark tourism in Lila, Bohol, the Chi-square test of independence

will be computed using the formula.

2 ( Oi−Ei )
x =Σ
Ei

Where,

2
x = Chi-squared

O i = Observed value

Ei = Expected value

To interpret the probability value, the following classification may be applied.

P-Value Description Interpretation

It indicates the null hypothesis
P-value ≤ 0.05 Rejected
is very unlikely.
It indicates the null hypothesis Accepted or it “fails to
P-value > 0.05
is very likely. reject”.
The P-value is near the cut-off. The hypothesis needs
P-value > 0.05
It is considered as marginal. more attention.

To determine the significance degree of variance in the level of perception on

whale shark tourism among the aspects concerning the perceptions of the respondents

on whale shark tourism, the One- Way Analysis of Variants (ANOVA) will be used.

MSSc
, FC =
MSSw

Where,
FC = Compute Value
MSS = mean of the sum of squares
c = column
w = within

To contrast the Analysis of Variance among the aspects concerning the

perception on whale shark tourism in Lila, Bohol, the Scheffe’s test will be used:

( X i−X j)2
F s=
S 2w ¿ ¿

Where,
X i = is the mean of the ith sample

X j = is the mean of the jth sample

ni = is the number of measurements in the ith sample

n j = is the number of measurements in the jth sample

2
Sw = is the within group variance given in lecture for the F test and is equal

2 Σ(n i−1)s 2i
to: S =
w
Σ(n1−1)

The critical value F s for the Scheffe test is calculated from the critical value of the
F test using:
F s = (k-1)(Critical value for F-test)

k = is the number of groups
