THE IMPACT OF ONLINE GAMES TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS IN CATMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across various academic

subjects. Teachers and education officials typically measure achievement using classroom

performance, graduation rates and results from standardized tests. Identifying the factors that

influence academic performance is an essential part of educational research. Previous studies

have documented the importance of personality traits, class attendance, and social network

structure. But there are many factors that give bad influence to the students ,and these includes

playing online games.

Online gaming is simply the playing of a video game over the internet, usually with friends.

Online games can be played on any number of devices from dedicated video games consoles

such as PlayStations, Xboxes, and Nintendo Switches, to PCs, laptops and mobile phones.

Online games are engaging they require higher order thinking, problem solving and persistence.

Many games, even first-person shooting video games (which may not be appropriate for

children) teach cooperation, group work and scenario-based learning. Most games require

strategy to understand and then work within the rules. All games offer a mix of intrinsic and

extrinsic rewards. Humans play games precisely because they are captivating and reward us

when we succeed. There are so many good benefits of online games, but there are also bad

benefits. Online games can offer young people a sense of escape from the reality of the world

and the social aspect of some games can help children feel part of a community. However,
without the right guidance on what games to play or when to play, children can be exposed to

certain risks such as in-game bullying, online grooming or in some extreme cases gaming

addiction. Here are some examples of online games bad effect to our self if getting addicted:

1. Dopamine addiction

2. Reduction in Motivation

3. Alexithymia and emotional suppression

4. Repetitive stress injuries and other health risks

5. Poor mental health

6. Relationship issues

7. Social disconnection

8. Exposure to toxic gaming environments

9. Poor academic or professional performance

10. Escapism and getting stuck in life

Research has shown that online video games have negative effects, and impact on some

students, directly on their performance. Video games are readily available. Studies show that

some children over the age of six have become addicted. There seems to be a connection

between depression, self-esteem, and the time a person spends playing video games. Studies

show that 94% of video game addicts are men and only 6% are women. Many of the men

interviewed were dissatisfied with their social life and had low self-esteem. It is understandable

that these two characteristics can affect a student’s performance in school.

A study was conducted in the USA with 3,034 participants. 9% of the adolescents interviewed

showed signs of addiction. About 4% played video games at least 50 hours a week. On

average, the study participants played about 20 hours a week.

Students who were addicted to video games tended to perform lower than their counterparts at

school who are not addicted to video games.

It’s interesting to see how China responds to the potentially negative effects video online games

can have on students. For example, China has passed laws prohibiting children from playing

more than 90 minutes of video games a day, and children can only play video games until 10

p.m.

Since, a lot of students in Catmon National High School likes to play online games. Researchers

wants to know the impact of online games to the academic performance of the students to the

said school. Therefore, further research is required to better discern the impacts of online

games to the academic performance of the senior high students. For this reasons, the purpose

of this study is to determine the effect of online games to the senior high students’ academic

performance in Catmon National High School
